Okay, but on the other hand Discord is basically IRC but worse, and I hate it every time I need to use that stupid site. The fact that its evil is really just rubbing salt in the wound. For me anyway.

I'm 45. I thought it looked terrible back then, I still think it looks terrible now. A Link to the Past looks a thousand times better than Ocarina of Time. I'll take good pixel art over polygon counts so low you can count them on your fingers any day, and that was absolutely my opinion in the 90s just as much as it is now. I recognize that I have always been in the minority with that opinion, I just wish people like you would stop telling me I don't understand. I do. I just still don't like it.

If you like games that are mostly a map covered in markers that represent 1000 hours of busywork and 2 hours of cool content, and you're into the cyberpunk coat of paint that's been slapped on it, then with all the bugfixes this is a good version of that. Otherwise I'd still pass.

To be fair, I think Lemmy has some usability issues that are probably holding it back some. Like, typing [email protected] will make a completely useless link to the other instance that doesn't let you subscribe to it or post there. There are also only two apps, and they're cool, but clearly unfinished. That's just a couple examples off the top of my head.

I think they're minor issues that will be ironed out relatively quickly, and whining about federation being unfathomable nerd stuff is just silly, but it is true that this is all happening before Lemmy was really ready for it, and a lot of casual users will be scared off by that.

Ocarina of Time. I thought 3D games from that era had terrible controls and ugly graphics even by the standards of the time, and that's only gotten worse over the years. Plus I just wasn't really ever all that into the Zelda formula from the time between A Link to the Past and Breath of the Wild. For me Breath of the Wild felt like a return to form after decades of mediocrity.

I don't even really think Ocarina of Time is bad, exactly. I just resent the fact that it feels like everybody I know holds it up as the greatest game of all time when in my opinion it's practically the definition of mid.

Not everything, no. But some things are.

Arch with Cinnamon DE and I use flatpak and not the AUR.

The all communities tab should be showing you communities from every instance you are federated with. It's true that they won't show up in your feed until someone on your instance connects to the instance it's on at least once, but you don't need to be on a massive server to be connected to all the major communities right from the start.

I think Flatpak is already good enough to be useful, and improving fast enough that it might be viable as the default way to distribute graphical apps for the majority of distros in the nearish future. I personally still prefer native apps, but I recognize those inherently involve massive duplication of effort, and that effort could be much better used in other places. If we're going to move to a universal packaging format, then for me personally Flatpak seems like the clear winner already, and that gulf is only widening. I just hope it doesn't stay so centralized around Flathub.

As Lemmy gets bigger there will be more and larger communities that aren't on Lemmy.ml, and if you're worried about the software itself, aside from being open source, there's also already a fediverse alternative called kbin. You can even used it to follow Lemmy communities if you want.

The whole point of the fediverse is that it can't reaaly get screwed up by a small number of people.

Yeah, I imagine potentially getting a couple extra zeros in the userbase of a still relatively small project in the space of like a month is more than just a little overwhelming. I hope reddit does at least allow more time for the API changes for a whole bunch of reasons, but I'm afraid they might really be planning on killing off third party apps before their IPO later this year.

Oh absolutely. I'm just saying that in ways other than water use almond milk is actually better than a lot of other plant based milks. It's just the combination of high water use and being mostly grown in an area suffering from a major water shortage that makes other plant based milks a clearly better choice if they're practical for you. It's still better than cow milk though.
