Mastodon is a piece of software. I don't see anyone saying "phpBB" or "WordPress" has a massive child abuse material problem.

Has anyone in the history ever said "Not a good look for phpBB"? No. Why? Because it would make no sense whatsoever.

I feel kind of a loss for words because how obvious it should be. It's like saying "paper is being used for illegal material. Not a good look for paper."

What is the solution to someone hosting illegal material on an nginx server? You report it to the authorities. You want to automate it? Go ahead and crawl the web for illegal material and generate automated reports. Though you'll probably be the first to end up in prison.

That would make sense if taxis weren't basically a mafia-like organization in most places.

Here, the taxi drivers are the absolute worst. They drive worse than student drivers. They don't give two shits about the customers - if you order a taxi and they find someone more convinient hailing them they'll just pick up that person and never come to pick you up with no notice. They can't follow basic GPS directions from their device and you often have to guide them.

The taxi companies send any complaints directly into the shredding machine. They have a legally enforced monopoly over a region and customers have no choice.

And I'm talking about a major city in America.

There is definitely a healthy middle ground, but just going back to taxis is not the solution.

I mean, I don't think a mod necessarily needs to be very skilled in something to moderate a community dedicated to that thing.

But obviously they should be aware that they're not, and not use their novice numbers as a boast. Which is what the new mod is doing. That just shows they're arrogant and clueless, two qualities you definitely don't want in a moderator.

You're not even trying are you?

[–] whatsarefoogee 20 points 1 year ago

Better obedient echo chamber, sure. If your solution to moderating a forum is banning all dissent, then you might as well just talk to a mirror.

Im not sure if you mean you've seen it from screenshots posted on againsthatesubreddits or that subreddit itself. Because the subreddit itself is a radioactive waste dump, that should not be approached without a lead plated hazmat suit.

No it's just one troll, the rest are just mocking him through imitation.

Is this sarcasm? Can't tell.

Yep. You can't tell me you don't know a manager who would completely unintentionally do just as shit of a job as Musk.

Well, Musk is that manager when he's unrestrained. The way he was publicly arguing with software engineers who built the software while himself being clueless, should have been the last confirmation anyone ever needed.

Musk is perpetually sitting at the peak of Mount Stupid of the Dunning Kruger scale.

All the issues KOSA is aiming to address are also issues that affect the general population. I would say legal age teenagers and young adults are affected just as much.

If the issues are deemed harmful enough to require legislation, then it should be addressing the issue themselves rather than adding harm by passing insanely privacy violating bills.

And when it comes to children, parents should be responsible for what their children as exposed to on the internet. This debate is decades old and it's pretty much been settled. Despite the society being strongly against exposing children to any sexual content, porn websites don't have any age verification. Parents are responsible for what their child views on the internet.

You can edit a blockchain without introducing new rules. The most obvious way would be to already have rules that allow you to edit it. If someone made a comment containing illegal content, Reddit would need to edit that previous block, they can't just mark it as deleted in a new block since they would still be hosting illegal content in that case. Another way is a blockchain re-org. If you keep all signed transactions, you can rebuild the blockchain while excluding unwanted transactions. That's what a 51% attack is essentially used for.

Blockchains don't have to be public any more than any other databases have to be public. Git repositories are technically blockchains, and are often private.

If reddit made their traditional database public, it would be just as possible to tell any changes they made by comparing it to the previous state. A blockchain would make it a lot easier, but not any more possible.

I think he was talking about reddit keeping karma scores and comments on a blockchain, not about the community points. Just from a practical standpoint, Ethereum would not be able to handle the volume of reddits data even if 100% capacity was dedicated to reddit.

But coming back to the community points, I can nearly guarantee even without looking that it's a token on ethereum blockchain. Tokens are custom coded, they can and often do have functions for admins such as issuing tokens, removing tokens, freezing addresses and pausing all token transactions. They also very often include an "upgrade" mechanism where the token code can be essentially rewritten.

  • Linked to Ethereum mainnet.
  • Earn and Spend points
  • Tips
  • Network fees

It's a crypto currency, and ethereum is a blockchain. Blockchains have little use outside of cryptocurrency. A cake mold to a cake would be a better comparison.

He explicitly said risks. If Seth MacFarlane could no longer be used as a voice actor for whatever reason, Family Guy would have been in very big trouble.

Why does the concept of risk need to be explained?
