Thank you for the thorough answer!!! I am definitely going to upgrade to ARPA once I get accustomed.

First off, I apologize if this is not the right place to ask for support. I am new to SDF...

That being said, I am interested in using SDF for some development work, but when I try to call git, it says "zsh: permission denied: git". Do I need some special access to use git? Thanks

The latency is miserable!!!! Unfortunately I don’t think wireless is worth the convenience is this case

That’s awesome! Thanks for sharing. I’m particularly interested in hearing about your experiences using VoIP. Could you tell me more?

So true… I think the worst thing about interacting with people on Reddit is getting downvoted to Hell if you say something sarcastic without “/s”

I am enamored with the idea of SDF, and I think it is an important part of computing history and the present. That being said, I am curious as to whether anyone actually finds it useful—aside from the fact that it hosts the instance!!

I would prefer a downvote to a needlessly rude comment in response to me, but yeah, I’m definitely not going to miss downvotes either

Yes, you are totally right! I do think that there is an ideological disconnect, though, since Lemmy is more of a long-form text site and Mastodon is more of a podium-and-audience deal. Perhaps if content was “cross posted” instead, that might help separate things. Just rolling off the top of my head

This is a somewhat terrifying concept to grapple with. I think letting Meta federate would be letting vomit soak into the carpet

Personally, I think it’s hideous and unintuitive. BUT I do love seeing alternative DEs, especially since I can only imagine how hard they are to develop (I’m a backend guy…). Props to the team, even if it’s an eyesore to me…

This! I’m glad to see many tech-minded folks on Lemmy, but it doesn’t have the same neckbeard self-importance that Reddit seems to be known for

Not just boring, but self-important and toxic… The culture of that site was a disaster even before Elon got his grubby hands on it

Just because the ActivityPub protocol lets Lemmy and Mastodon interact doesn’t necessarily mean they should… Of course, I say that as we interact between the two!! It’s an interesting design dilema that I’m sure will receive more thought as the platforms grow
