In 5th grade they defined every kid that can speak another language as ESL (English as a second language) even if you spoke English perfectly. Then they put all of the ESL kids in a different class on the opposite side of the school. The result was that the school became de facto racially segregated with all Asian and Latino kids on one side and all white kids on the other. It’s not like it served a purpose anyway since none of the teachers could speak anything other than English.

But that is basically it from the users standpoint. Under the hood it’s as if all of these separate forums can talk to each other and if you post on one forum it gets copied to all of the other ones.

So if you want or subscribe to something, just go to the subscribe tab and you will see all of the lemmy compatible sites even if it’s not the site you originally signed up at.

Since everything is federated, there will be multiple copies of the data across many servers so even if the original server goes down, the data is still saved on the other servers. Albeit without any images or any other non-text content which I think just get copied as links pointing back to the original server.

Now if you are just wondering about the sheer amount of text data, all of Wikipedia is about 20gb so while it is possible to run out of space, it probably won't happen any time soon. Images and video, on the other hand, are a different story.

I think it became the center of the protest simply because it was the most popular Reddit iOS app and the developer actively spoke out against accusations from the Reddit CEO.

In terms of why it was so popular I can only tell you my own experience which started with bacon reader which like most Reddit apps at the time mostly mimicked the old reddit site. Then I switched to alien blue which used more of the iOS best practices such as larger buttons, swipes, etc. When alien blue turned into the official Reddit app, it became bloated with ads, suggested posts and other annoyances. At which point I switched to apollo which had the similar nice UI without the baggage of the official app.

But honestly I think I only got off the official app because of something annoying with collapsing threads that I have since forgotten.

I don’t think raddle is federated so you won’t be able to access it with any lemmy or kbin compatible apps

I created an account and nothing loaded but the FAQs suggests an interesting concept. It’s almost like a wiki Reddit where people should be able to correct and edit other posts and comments. Not sure how it would work practically but I would be very curious to see what happens
