That is untrue. Reddit would do just fine without their mods. Mods dont moderate subreddits out of the goodness of their heart to volunteer their time. They do it because they like having power over their communities. Reddit is threatening to take away that power from them, which is why they all crumbled so fast. It is unbelievably easy to find new people to take power over an internet community.

Check your local library. Many of them have 3D printers and will let you use them for just the cost of the materials.
Just curious, why are you assuming they are American?
Certainly could be, but probably an optimistic take. Most likely they're just trying to do what corporations have been doing for ages, which is to weaponize government policy to prevent competition. They don't want restrictions that will materially impact their product, they want restrictions that will materially impact startups to make it more difficult for them to intrude on the established space.
