Honestly I miss reddit circa 2015. Obviously before The Idiot and half the world lurching toward fascism - but also back when "fuck off, Nazi" was treated better than being a goddamn Nazi.

The proliferation of "civility" is poisonous to online discourse. It is always the wrong metric. Trolls love being polite monsters. r/Politics even went a step further and demanded all opinions be taken in good faith. Do those idiots know what trolling is? Do they not understand bad faith... as a concept? It only works because people mistake it for good faith. Demanding everyone do that is a gift to trolls.

Moderation requires common-sense identification of who's being an asshole. It's never about no-no words. If a script could handle the job, we would let it.

Lemmy has far too many communities with rules going 'never be rude to anyone ever!!!' and then zero enforcement when someone calls you a cunt for gently correcting their grammar. That is the worst of both worlds. Anyone sincerely trying is going to hold back from just dealing with assholes appropriately, like an adult, but those people are then left with no recourse against pointlessly toxic shitheads. I don't want a screaming match. I want words to matter.

Also if you enjoy Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett has a similar deep snark. Discworld's a whole mess of books but you can kinda jump in anywhere. I recommend Guards! Guards! or Going Postal. He did Good Omens with baby Neal Gaiman, and they'd write chapters separately, then throw out every joke they'd bought thought of.

iOS locking out users should be a crime.

It is a right bitch that the reason to leave is 100% the bastards in charge. The community was fine. (Okay, giant asterisks all over that, but you know what I mean. The community was not the cause for masses walking away with a sea of middle fingers lit by burning bridges.)

I'm not here because it's better. I'm here because fuck Spez. And fuck enshittification. Fifteen years and these greedy incompetents made it impossible to come back without feeling like betrayal. The only reason I'm not deleting anything is that I don't do that shit. Nothing any human being put effort into deserves to be lost forever.

Elmo did us the favor of turning his stolen harassment engine into an all-stick-no-carrot experience in a fucking hurry.

Copyright law is still a thing.

To the surprise of literally nobody.

And yet - there is discussion. Maybe, just maybe, those conversations don't hinge on 'but what if nuh-uh?'

I'm not sure you have an argument beyond that. Unless you think attacking my character counts.

You keep shuffling through essentialist insults with no justification, and it's not impressive or funny or infuriating; it is simply dull. You don't seem to notice or care that I keep talking about your awful behavior without needing to expand that into some psychological profile. I don't think you're incompetent. I think you're being an asshole. And the key word in that sentence is "being." As in: whenever you like, you can stop.

You can stop pounding the table for copyright law, like anyone involved supports it, in this context.

You can stop scoffing at expectations that this leftist-adjacent site, with rampant civil disobedience, would be expected to tolerate... tangential discussion of an external website containing PDFs. Nonfiction papers ostensibly available to any university student. A subject, in fact, kind of important to the history of reddit, in a way that is a big reason Lemmy came to exist.

You can obviously stop trying to land hits like I give two fucks for your opinion of me personally. Ask nicely and I'll insult myself more accurately and more damningly than you can apparently manage. I'd do it even if we had an audience. We do not. Which makes the ineffectual troll behavior all the more disappointing.

You can stop insisting you have a rock-solid point besides, and then failing to distinguish it in any way from gesturing loosely toward the laaaw and assuming that justifies erasing this tiny defiant forum while other similar defiance remains prominent.

But I'm gonna bet you won't.

'Sorry sweaty, I don't care!' Four hours later: 'Hey just checking in, do continue spoon-feeding me basic reading comprehension.'

You keep declaring I'm embarrassed by any of this interaction. Why.

Googling around suggests it's a global setting. Having recently used an Xfce version that didn't want to super+arrow, maximize-vertical is an okay tool, but outside of super-duper-widescreen, it's not what I'd ever want by default.

Sorry, can you run that past someone who speaks English?

Possibly demonstrating ductility? Classier than chewing on the damn thing.

Does it bother you in the slightest that this accusation has no basis whatsoever?

Today you ignored detailed explanations against your argument, after needing three takes just to see that basic tiny error.

You latched onto it. I moved on. You have no counter beyond that, except pretending I must be emotionally compromised after your unimpressive efforts to counter-sneer.

I also immediately acknowledged you aren't who said that, when you pointed it out. But you plainly think the same thing - as evidenced by, for example, telling me to delete a comment.

I wish you cared what words mean.

Right, sorry, you just agreed with them. That's totally different.
