I also installed my private server and setting everything up was quite easy :) I left nginx as is and just put everything behind my Caddy as reverse proxy

1. Brief overview

Lemmy is a federated and self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion forum. Each instance is able to connect with other instances (via ActivityPub). This means it doesn't matter which instance you sign up with since you're still able to see and interact with communities from other public instances. Communities are the Lemmy equivalent of Reddit's Subreddits.

  • Your account is tied to an instance.
  • You can reach all other instances via the instance you signed up with.
  • You can post in any communities that have not been banned by your instance.
  • You can comment on any posts in any communities that have not been banned by your instance.
  • You can only create communities in the same instance as your account, assuming the instance allows new community creation.

2. Finding communities

Local communities and already known communities can be found through the "Communities" tab in the navbar. The easiest ways to find new communities are the following:

3. Joining communities

To join a community (e.g. this one: lemmy.iqecke.de/c/ibd), just find the community identifier ([[email protected]](/c/[email protected])) in the sidebar of a remote community and paste it into the search-field of the Community-Tab on your home instance.

4. Settings

The settings page is located in the dropdown of your profile. From there, you're able to change your account information, delete your account and more. From there, you're also able to change your preferred display language (by default Lemmy always picks ur browser's default language. Moreover, you can also change the used theme from there. Currently night-crystal is this instance's default theme. Feel free to contact the instance Admin Team to add more themes.
