This protected area invites plants to grow in an otherwise uninviting desert. This makes the perfect spot to wait out the coming heat in the daylight.
You've been following this winding trail through the windswept dunes for days. Ahead you see it split. You worry about the choice you have to make, with your supplies near gone.
Tall grasses on both sides of the road means many places to hide and ambush. The rustle of the wheat is calming, but you force yourself to keep alert.
Your boots were waterlogged hours ago, but your party continues trudging through the marsh. Danger lurks just below the surface here, and your feet are the least of your concern.
As the sun fades it casts long shadows. Every movement from the trees reflects in the shadows and you keep thinking something is there. Roll perception.
The salty sea air fills your lungs and a constant cool breeze blows inland from here. The map led here, but where exactly is here?
[Pass] The tree is well rotted but immovable. Enough others have passed to the side of it that the trail is starting to follow that way.

Aye, many map makers publish gridded and ungridded versions. I've started with just ungridded since I figure it's easy enough for someone to add one if they want, but I can always add them too if it is wanted.
Also these maps fall into a more environmental style, where elements don't conform strictly to a grid system (but one can still be used). These tend to feel more natural and thematic but if you're a stickler for a grid to be clear on which cells are cover, etc, then you'll use maps that starts as a grid and the art is drawn into it.
