Good shout on the 2DS XL - I found the 3D tended to not add to the experience too much after a while, so the bigger screen was definitely the right decision.

I find it interesting you think Monster Hunter World is underrated, considering it's literally the most popular Monster Hunter game to date! There's a lot of people who prefer the older games, but the newer games definitely have much more appeal to most people.

  1. Got my original DS as a kid as a christmas present, it's crazy to me how old the original DS is now. Got the New 2DS XL later on when I was in university since I wanted to play the Pokémon games.

  2. In general it's probably one of the Phantasy Star games or Bayonetta 1, but for the DS specifically it's got to be Phantasy Star Zero.

  3. Definitely Phantasy Star Zero on the DS for people who like ARPG dungeon crawlers! It's not incredibly content rich but it's a cute little game that you can put a lot of hours into if you like looters.

  4. Playing Pokémon Platinum back when forum communities like Bulbapedia were huge is probably my favourite DS memories. I just loved how tight-knit everything felt when you had Pokémon friends back then.

  5. Was playing Phantasy Star Zero recently but been busy, but I should really get back to it.

This is because due to how federation works, communities have to be "found" by the server before they start appearing in searches if they're not on the same instance. There is no central server that pushes all the known fediverse to instances (although relays do exist for other platforms such as Mastodon which do this to some degree).

If you know a community exists on another server, search it in the search by bar typing:

  1. !community@instance (example: [email protected])
  2. https://instance/c/community (example: https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy)

This will cause the server to fetch it - it takes a while and might not show up the first time, but if you come back to it in 5 minutes and try again, it should appear the next time.

I suspect support will be axed eventually - chances are many people will flock to these exempt apps to still get their 3rd party client fix, and that will put them on the radar for Reddit to find a way to justify pulling the rug out under them too (e.g. "Our app is now accessible!").

It's a shame that Reddit went like this.

People will never run their own stuff - it requires some know-how regardless of what it is, and there are costs associated with it.

Still, people not running their own stuff doesn't bother me in the slightest, but most people will refuse to use things other than what they know even if there are alternatives available. People will come up with all sorts of arbitrary reasons but it comes down to familiarity and inertia.

Not sure they can do anything - since I discovered federated platforms and started using more FOSS and non-corporate technology in my life, I am really glad to break away from it all.

I'm still on some platforms I'd rather not be (Discord), but the unfortunate truth of social platforms is that you have to be on them to socialise with certain friends/family, and encouraging people to use something different to talk to you is a non-starter for many.

It's not really that deep - it's a combination of network effect and inertia.

Because there's "nobody" on Lemmy, people don't join Lemmy. Because nobody is joining Lemmy, there's "nobody" on Lemmy, and so on and so forth.

Furthermore, Reddit (and other big social medias) already have "everyone" there, so to the vast majority of people they're just superior platforms as it's easier to find both people and content. Moving to another platform means giving that up.

I'm not sure how to do this with Jerboa as I'm not currently using it, but what you do on the web page is open the search bar, then search for the community you want like this:

  1. [[email protected]](/c/[email protected])
  2. https://lemmy.ml/c/fossdroid

If you get no results, you will need to wait for a few minutes, then try again as it means your current server doesn't know about it until you forced it to look. Alternatively, your server may have blocked the other server, although this isn't the case as I just forced fossdroid to appear to lemmy.world.

I've noticed that despite setting my default view to "All" in the user settings, my default view on the home page appears to be local.

It's not the worst thing ever, since hitting All is not a problem, just interesting it doesn't seem to work, unless I'm missing something!

Edit: It appears to have fixed itself, so maybe there was some time for the setting to kick in, although the local tab shows highlighted.

I expect all the third party apps to go this way, these are just the first of them to go.

I personally use Infinity and expect that to go the way of the dodo too. While the dev has said they might keep the app around, people would have to provide their own developer API keys which shuts out the vast majority of people by default.
