One way my code improves is by thinking what I need to comment. Then I refactor some and the comments become somewhat redundant.

I think it is somewhat hard to change my outlook at this point. My reasoning is that truly devout religious people have been infected with a mind virus. They may be nice people or pretend to be nice people, but there is also the mind virus, which is ultimately not trust worthy. In general, if hard decisions need to be made by a third party that potentially have a big impact on my life I'd not fully trust a religious person.

In daily life I am very friendly with a bunch of religious people, but I mistrust the religious part of them.

100%.

I have that same problem with meat eaters too. How is it possible that we know we are brutally mass breeding and killing animals for food we don't need, is fucking up the planet and isn't all that healthy either, while at the same time also pretending to be civilized human beings that care about animals and the climare. And every time I raise the issue people make the dumbest excuses I have heard a thousand times...

People, once brainwashed into a way of thinking and behaving, can just be really hard to change even if you have all the arguments on your side.

I couldn't agree more with the statement made. People who believe in fairy tales can't be fully trusted.

I couldnt agree more. I have totally underestimated how nutty religious people truly are. I used to think Christians are good neighbours and boring law abiding citizens, but when push comes to shove and you really need them it turns out that they are just nutcases who are very adept at playing the good neighbour role. At least that has been my experience. I just can't trust adults who believe in fairy tales anymore.

And that has a whole bunch of negative consequences, because these people won't listen to reason if it inconveniences them

Cancer is really a very good analogy. It is parasitic, self preserving, good for nothing, preys on the weak, always trying to expand and lure you deeper and total garbage.

Jim Jeffries said it best though:

It's one less excuse. Based on my understanding of probabilities, for most it won't be the final straw.

I should be that easy to convince people that plants don't feel pain 🤷‍♂️

[–] kicksystem 1 points 1 year ago

We used to think rocks were completely solid, then we discovered they are actually mostly empty space. Perhaps one day we'll discover rocks feel pain too.

Have you ever heard of epistemology?

[–] kicksystem 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

There are exactly zero good scientific reasons to believe plants feel pain my dude. I'm not being close minded nor open minded, I am just being sensible. Being "open minded" about anything without any solid justification isn't being open minded, it is being naive. Are you going to call me close minded for not believing purple swans exist? We didn't use to know that black swans existed, so maybe purple swans exist? I believe just as much in that plants feel pain as I believe in that santa exists, which is effectively nil.

To quote the website I found (doplantsfeelpain.com):

"We consider the likelihood that plants, with their relative organizational simplicity and lack of neurons and brains, have consciousness to be effectively nil". That is not entirely zero, but for all intents and purposes zero.

This is not only based on non-extrapolation, but also based on our knowledge of consciousness, feelings and pain.

The reactions to my post are indeed hilarious, although I also find it a bit exasperating. Especially if you take into account that normally I get downvoted to hell for mentioning animal suffering, so I thought I would pre-empt those downvoters and speak to them, but now they've found a new reason to downvote and hate the messenger instead of engage the message 🤷‍♂️

Indeed people are super resistant to any vegan message. Yet at the same time, the facts are simply the brutal facts. It's simply super bad for the planet and a nightmare of unimaginable scale for the animals. It'd be very nice if people would just stop, which is definitely possible in 2023, but it is indeed easier to point at the evil billionaires then change your own behavior.
