I've added a pinned FAQ to the community to address/clarify what's been brought up in this thread so far. LMK if you have any other questions.

Hi! Welcome to [email protected].

So what is this place?

Any and all fake album covers are welcome here. Yes, you can create fake albums for existing artists, though in that case you'll probably be expected to fit the style the artist has used before.

At their core, fake album covers can be art in and of themselves, but also a glimpse into what could be. That's what drew me to them, and I hope this community grows into a place that makes that evident.

Why the emphasis on OC?

I understand the appeal to take the top rated posts on r/fakealbumcovers, but filling the community with reposts won't build any momentum. If you want to see this place grow, make a post!

And to clarify an adjacent point, the OC requirement extends to the final product, which includes everything in your post. So taking a base image and editing it is fine, or even if you include an unedited image, but have the perfect name or fake backstory, it's OC in my book.

I want to make a post, but I can't come up with anything. What do I do?

First and foremost, don't force it. Spend some time looking at the real album covers that you're drawn to, and see if there's a specific element you want to evoke from what you make as well.

If you're really at your wits' end, and you just want to get started with something, there is the Album Cover Game. Considering that the name and image are more or less random, you'd probably have to put some effort on the editing/graphic design part of things to make it stand out.

I don't know editing, so what do I do here?

First, the obligatory "you can always learn". I haven't progressed much beyond adjustment layers in Photoshop, so I get how daunting it can be.

However, I think there are ways to contribute even if you're not creating an entire album cover from scratch. From how I see it, there are three aspects to this:

  1. Finding the 'right' image
  2. Coming up with a name for the album and artist (And anything else to flesh it out like genre or tracklist, optionally)
  3. Editing the image so it feels like an album cover

I'd like to find a way for people to do at least 1 and 2, and potentially find cool combinations, and hopefully end up as posts once someone edits them. The immediate idea I had was for a weekly thread where top level comments have to images (you'll have to host them elsewhere like imgur and link to them), and replies to top level comments have to be "Artist Name" - "Album Name". If this sounds like something you'd be interested to participate in, or even if you have other suggestions, do chime in down below!

(This is what I could find.)[https://albumcovers.fandom.com/wiki/Album_Cover_Game] The base image is copyrighted (and that's allowed), but the final result is still OC, since the text is supposed to be edited in by yourself.

I shall, thanks!

The fake album game is more of an algorithm to get a fake album through chance (the final product matters much more than the method imo), but it could be helpful for those who don't know where to begin.

[โ€“] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

My actual preference is only that the final post show effort. I honestly wouldn't mind if the base picture wasn't OC, or even the uploaded picture, if the name of the artist/album and other information (possibly a tracklist or genre, like you mentioned) come together to evoke the unique vibe that album art often has. I didn't want to write all that out, but some change will be necessary to how the rules are written at the moment.

I'll probably go back and add something like that for what I've posted so far, but in the meantime, do mention what genres you think they might be. It would be quite interesting to see how different people interpret it.

Thanks! I use Photoshop mainly, though I only have a rudimentary idea of how most of the tools work.

Fair point, I'll make some tweaks.

I think decades of minimalist, 'intuitive' interfaces that abstract what's going on in the background have made us too lazy to go beyond the bare minimum to switch platforms in general.

A common criticism I saw of the fediverse was the fact that you have to decide on an instance. As if any significant part of your life doesn't require a certain amount of research before making a decision. We all just buy the car that the dealership tells us to buy, of course.

I remember reading a book that talked about public spaces and how we often think of malls as public spaces, but they have so many restrictions and ulterior motives that it doesn't really hold.

They're essentially the irl equivalent of centralised social media platforms. I hope once the fediverse really takes off, we can have 'official' platforms/instances that are run by governments that federate only to other 'official' ones. That seems like a better way to reach people, instead of Xitter.
