It's not just the act of spending on the military, it's about control which they get through the use of the military.

US support was never out of the goodness of their hearts, there was always going to be a price to pay, but of course trump goes about it in the most hamfisted way possible.

[–] hark 14 points 14 hours ago

That works if you're in a position of power and don't need to rely on the people you're reneging on.

They think other government workers are a waste but they themselves are a special case because reasons. It's easy to criticize when you don't understand what is going on. Hopefully they learn from this instead of thinking it's an honest mistake.

I'll eat almost anything so there are plenty of examples but I'll pick one of my favorites: chicken hearts. They're tasty and have a satisfying springiness to them! Organ meats in general get unfairly hated upon, I feel.

Then why are they the recipient of the most US foreign aid? Should be an easy sell to run on stopping the sending of billions in aid (including weapons) to israel every year if they're so self-sufficient.

The US is not the sole assignee of blame, israel is clearly the primary one to blame, but the US is the biggest supporter of israel and without the US and other allies, israel would be forced to the bargaining table. How can the US supply billions of dollars in weapons to a country committing genocide and remain blameless?

What they say is immaterial when their actions betray their flimsy words. Your argument is akin to claiming DOGE is an earnest effort to cut down on government waste because of the claims that Musk has made. Taking someone at their word is a fool's errand, especially when it comes to politics. We agree that israel is committing a genocide but for some reason you think someone giving billions of dollars in weapons to them is not aiding this process. I do not understand this line of logic, please help me understand how empty unrealistic promises (made over decades and never sincerely acted upon) and flowery words are enough to make giving billions in weapons to a genocide-committing country not an act of support for genocide.

The "two state solution", which will never happen, is the go-to talking point for anyone who wants to look like they're working towards peace but who are really just stalling while israel carries out the ethnic cleansing. Look at the borders, they were specifically drawn up to fracture Palestine from the beginning. No two states could exist under such a ridiculous configuration, it's no mere coincidence. It's been talked about for decades and yet we are no closer to that goal than we were all those decades ago. So of course Harris, known for saying whatever she thinks will advance her career the most, will parrot that same line.

As for the ceasefire, that was the work of Biden, who was very busy sending billions in weapons:

bypassing congress to do it: https://apnews.com/article/us-israel-gaza-arms-hamas-bypass-congress-1dc77f20aac4a797df6a2338b677da4f

$1 billion: https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/15/biden-administration-sending-1-billion-more-in-weapons-to-israel-congressional-aides.html

$20 billion "two days before scheduled cease-fire talks begin in the region.": https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-approves-20-billion-weapons-sales-israel-hamas-backs-out-cease-fire-talks/

$8 billion in 2025, just before his pathetic ass was leaving office: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cpvne94v1rdo

The infamous 2,000 pound bomb shipments of which he paused a single shipment: https://www.reuters.com/world/us-has-sent-israel-thousands-2000-pound-bombs-since-oct-7-2024-06-28/

israel somehow managing to use 2,000 pound bombs even though Biden paused a single shipment: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/09/29/israel-bomb-beirut-nasrallah-death/

Here's him claiming he'd stop sending weapons (note the date): https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/08/politics/joe-biden-interview-cnntv/index.html

Biden set out red lines and didn't care when israel crossed them: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/oct/17/netanyahu-weapons-biden

So yeah, democrats are very good at saying the right things, but will continue to do the wrong things. Even then, sometimes democrats will just go out and say the wrong things as well, here's Harris saying she would NOT support a weapons embargo on israel: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg798l439ydo

Tell me, how sincere is a ceasefire deal when they're continually supplying one side with more than enough weapons to flatten all of the other side? How sincere are they about holding back israel when they set red lines and then don't change anything when they cross them? There is a reason why the ceasefire finally went through when Trump entered office and it's because it's all for show and doesn't actually matter because israel is only using it as a pause (and PR stunt) before continuing the genocide.

I like that nothing matters!

In the first, the AI model was programmed to detect whether it was about to be shut down and to replicate itself before it could be terminated. In the other, the AI was instructed to clone itself and then program its replica to do the same -- setting up a cycle that could continue indefinitely.

Like how any regular application can be instructed to copy itself i.e. a computer worm? Not exactly shocking for a computer program to do.

Context: https://lemmy.world/comment/14613536 Screenshotted context just in case:

A user claims that the killing in Palestine stopped under Biden now. I point out that biden had full-throatedly supported the genocide for over a year. A mod deletes my post and says that biden didn't "state" (keyword here) full-throated support for genocide.

I counter by saying I consider sending billions in support of genocide counts as full-throated support for genocide. I also point out that I didn't say Biden stated his support for genocide and that he didn't need to outright state it because actions speak louder than words.

I receive a temp ban for that counter and the mod adds a response where they claim the weapons were "provided for defense from Iran, full stop." which sounds to me like actual misinformation because how the hell does bombing hospitals in Gaza defend Israel from Iran? I'm not bothered by their stupid opinion, but I am bothered that they are enforcing it through moderation.

I ran into a similar moderation problem on the Political Memes community also on .world, but I didn't bother making a post here for that because that's just a dumb meme community and I was better off just blocking it, but now this is concerning a world news community and it's awful to see something like this happening in a community that's supposed to keep people aware of the news.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong and it actually is misinformation to say it's full-throated support of genocide to send billions in weapons to a country using those weapons to commit genocide. Please let me know what you think!
