The real question here is why the researcher “librarian” didn’t even attempt to anonymize the dataset before making it available. Full anonymization isn’t a trivial task, but at least removing unique identifiers or replacing them with randomly generated ones would be good practice.

Your use of the verb “learned” and the adjective “well-educated” suggested that you bought into these views wholesale and uncritically and are now sharing them as some sort of epiphany. Hence the downvotes.

Ooph. I guess we can get really dismayed at this, or maybe we should just think that given his infamy it’s only natural he’s able to monetize it, one way or another. So many influencers produce content that is on the face of it of very little value. Granted, not so many are making a career out of promoting the most toxic aspects of (so-called) masculinity. Even Jordan Peterson has redeeming qualities compared to this. Of course that’s a low bar. A low bar that seemingly many men are happy to pass and fork money for in the hopes of bettering themselves.
Because stating that people are biased for beauty and youth and western, predominantly white media are biased for whiteness, is like saying that the sky is blue. It adds nothing and detracts from the story, which is more about the excessive drinking culture in youth, backpacking, thrill-seeking, Southeast Asia, and a host more closely related topics. Noticing that the faces on the BBC heading are pretty blonde girls and making an issue of it is anything but deep. It is the most superficial thing you could notice and comment on, bordering on creepy, because you reduce a story to “pretty blondes”. If and when you suspect that an important story is buried because its protagonists are not conventionally attractive or because of their race or gender identity, then do bring it up. Then you are helping elevate people whose stories perhaps should be told and heard more widely.

Yes sadly I see more and more people talk about “radical marxists”, “communists”, etc when referring to very mainstream liberal politicians. They seem to be taking all this extreme name-calling seriously. Of course, whether fairly or not, it sounds similarly crazy to many Trump supporters when they or their grifter in chief are labeled “fascists”, “nazis”, and the like. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m starting to miss the political center and moderates. Whatever happened to moderates?
