Hi all!

One of the things I miss from Reddit is the various regional/state/etc level communities for discussing things that affect your geographic area.

So, to help counter that, I created the /c/[email protected] community to discuss the goings-on within the state of North Dakota. It is currently devoid of people, as one might expect for a geographically-large but population-tiny state.

However, what might be more useful for you is this list of communities that I've put together of all US state/territory/district level communities that I am currently aware of. I plan to keep that list fairly updated for awhile, so if there's a missing community, do let me know.

The Fediverse is a bit...confusing right now, to say the least. So, if you've just happened to find your way into the North Dakota community and are wondering where the community for your state/territory/district is (if it exists), I've compiled a list of all state/territory/district communities that I am currently aware of.

This list will of course quickly go out-of-date as the Lemmy community builds, so leave a comment below if you know of additional communities not yet listed. I'll update this list as often as I can.

I just don’t see how Burgum can differentiate himself enough from Trump or Desantis. I think he’ll probably be a “rising star” of sorts in the early phase of the primary - I could see a decent chunk of Iowa votors being willing to vote for a prairie state R. I just don’t know how he makes it much further from there.

That said, if his goal is to just get a cabinet position, none of that really matters.

At some point when I was a teenager, I bought a super cheap calligraphy pen kit at some hobby store. It was incredibly flimsy, the pen cracked within like a month, but I thought it was super coot to be writing with a fancy-shmancy fountain pen (and a stub nib no less!). But that was kinda it for a while once I burned through the three ink cartridges it came with.

Then, maybe a year later, I stumbled upon Baystate Blue and was like OMG LOOK HOW BLUE THAT IS and had to buy it and a real fountain pen to experiment with it.

Many things were stained in the process. I have no regrets.

Ahhh, been trying to figure this out all day! Thanks for this

Actually, it wouldn't surprise me if they decided to kill it sooner rather than later. Restricting mobile access even further indicates to me that they're probably trying to get all their negative press out of the way as quickly as possible.

/r/fountainpens was one of the best! That said, I've been impressed with how active [email protected] has been so far

I think you are definitely right that there will wind up being some degree of centralization, even in the Fediverse, but I think the issue will be far less severe than the one we find ourselves in right now.

The fact of the matter is that it takes some degree of skill and willingness to devote time and resources to complete strangers in order to host a Lemmy instance, which will probably result in there only being a handful of "big" instances where the vast majority of communities are located. These instances could theoretically be bought, sold, and neglected, and potentially face the same conclusion as Reddit, bringing down whatever communities they happen to host.

However, the difference here is that some communities would be unaffected in that scenario. Suppose that Instance A were to go off the rails, taking with it for example the Lemmy equivalents of /r/gifs, /r/politics, and /r/gaming. This would suck, but at the same time other instances would be unaffected, meaning the Lemmy equivalents of like /r/news, /r/dankmemes, and /r/space could continue on. Furthermore, if the mods of those Instance A communities were aware of the possibility of the impending death of Instance A, they could form a migration plan ahead of time to another instance, and communicate this to the users ahead of time.

Compare that to where we are now, where literally every subreddit is shut down and needing to find an alternative place to land with practically no warning. I'd much prefer the federated scenario.

The first /r/place was seriously one of the coolest and most chaotic things to watch unfold in real-time!

[–] flickertail 2 points 2 years ago

Those three (and their variants, à la Kubuntu/Xubuntu) are all good - I probably wouldn't look at others unless you have a strong desire for something else.

Between this and Twitter, I feel like "enshittification" is really the word of the past year. It's incredible to watch these massive social networks completely turn on their users in the name of profit.

Note: This is pretty incomplete at this point. I'm intending to return to this later with more details and pictures.

This guide covers the procedure for performing an oil change on the 1GR-FE engine in the 5th generation 4Runner.

Under ideal conditions, the manual specifies that this procedure should be done no later than every 10,000 miles or 1 year (whichever comes first). However, under less than ideal conditions (i.e. towing, short trips, off-road, etc.), it is recommended to perform this procedure no later than every 5,000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first).

Materials

Item Specification or Part Number Quantity
Engine oil SAE 0W-20* 6.6 qt
Engine oil filter element 04152-YZZA5 1
Engine oil drain plug gasket 90430-12031 1

* The manual specifies that SAE 5W-20 may be used if 0W-20 is not available. Probably only do this if you have absolutely no other choice.

Tools

Type Sizes/Specs
6 or 12 point sockets 10mm, 12mm, 14mm
Oil filter wrench 64mm 14 flute
Plastic rivet removal tool*
Oil catch pan Must hold at least ~7 qt
Rags/towels
Oil funnel
Nitrile gloves (recommended)
Torque wrench (optional) Must cover 10-20 lbf ft
Floor jack (optional)
Jack stands (optional)

* A flathead screwdriver usually works too.

Procedure

  1. Remove the front air duct (Limited only)
  • If you break any of these push pins, the part number you're looking for is 90467-09227. These can usually be had pretty cheaply, and it's sometimes nice to have some spares on hand.
  1. Remove the plastic front skid plate
  • If you break the plastic push pin, the replacement part number is 90467-09227.
  1. Remove the main skid plate
  2. Drain the engine oil
  • Remove oil fill plug from top of engine.
  • Locate the 14mm oil drain plug.
  • Place your oil catch pan under the drain plug.
  • Using a 14mm socket or box-end wrench, loosen the drain plug.
  • Remove the oil drain plug and allow the oil to fully drain from the pan.
  • Clean the drain plug and the area around the drain hole with rags. Make sure the old drain plug gasket is removed (it sometimes sticks to the oil pan).
  • Once the oil has all drained (i.e. something like one drop every second or two), reinstall the drain plug with a new drain plug gasket. Torque to 30 lbf ft.
  1. Change oil filter
  • Locate the oil filter housing.
  • Place your oil catch can under the oil filter housing.
  • Optional: The oil filter housing will still have some oil in it, which can make a mess when removing the filter housing. To drain this oil, remove the oil filter housing drain plug using a 3/8" male square drive (i.e. any 3/8" extension). push the plastic drain tool (included with the new filter) into the corresponding hole in the filter housing to drain the oil.
  • Using the oil filter wrench, remove the oil filter housing.
  • Remove the old oil filter element and rubber o-ring from the filter housing (there will be two o-rings if you removed the housing's drain plug).
  • Install the new filter element into the filter housing.
  • Install the new rubber o-rings into the appropriate place(s). Coat the o-ring(s) with new oil.
  • Reinstall filter housing. Torque to 18 lbf ft.
  • If you removed the filter housing drain plug, re-install the drain plug. Torque to 9 lbf ft.
  1. Add new oil
  • Place oil funnel in the oil fill hole.
  • Add about 6 to 6.25 qt of oil to the engine (to prevent over-filling).
  • Reinstall oil fill plug.
  1. Check for leaks
  • Inspect the oil fill plug, oil filter housing, and oil drain plug and remember what these areas look like.
  • Start the engine and let run for 10-15 seconds.
  • Shut down the engine.
  • Inspect these same areas and look for any leaks.
  1. Reinstall skid plates
  • If no leaks found, reinstall the two skid plates.
  • On Limited models, re-install the air duct.
  1. Reset maintenance counter
  • Turn the car to ON (engine off).
  • Switch odometer to Trip A.
  • Turn car OFF.
  • Hold trip reset button.
  • Turn car ON (engine off).
  • Wait for countdown on dash display to finish.
  • Release trip reset button.
  1. Check oil level.
  • Remove engine oil dipstick and clean if off with rags/towels.
  • Wait for 3-5 minutes.
  • Install dipstick and promptly remove. Oil level should be between the two markings at the end of the dipstick.
  • If oil level is too low, add a little extra oil to the engine. If the level is too high, oil needs to be drained using the drain plug (difficult). Run engine for a few minutes before checking oil level again.
