Science fiction flourished from the earliest days of the Soviet Union. A rare space to explore other realms and utopian dreams of progress. But with the Soviet Union's collapse different narratives bubbled up.

Many of them reactionary, imperial, violent with one sub genre flourishing above all - Popadantsy: accidental time travel where protagonists return to World War Two or the Imperial past to set the path of Russian history on the 'right' course, perhaps with the aid of Stalin or even Hitler. The enemies are frequently the US, Britain and the West.

Historian Catherine Merridale explores how the once visionary world of Russian science fiction shifted in the time of Vladimir Putin to become a reactionary playground. Did the real invasion of Ukraine actually began amid the pages of such dark fictions?

The site is a wonderful resource for classic science fiction. Actually the author / historian is more specific about the period he covers, 1945-1985. Posts always have fascinating cover art from books and magazines, making it an invaluable time capsule. i discovered the site via the author's Mastodon account, https://wandering.shop/@SFRuminations. I hope you also all enjoy it.

It's a Divoom Ditoo. A fancy Bluetooth speaker with customizable screen. A toy really.

Ha, nice. That should go up in a wall plaque.

Good enough for me. Dark and rich, generally consistent in quality.

Ha, you're right. All it has is an expiration date. Fresh enough though that I prefer my brew over the ones from shops.

It's a bit overpriced at Robinsons though. It's cheaper at other shops.

It's a Divoom Ditoo speaker. It's a nifty retro-esque gadget and a decent speaker, which is mainly what I use it for. The screen is customizable which adds to the appeal. Yes, there's also a timer. Nice bit of deco.

Moya from Farscape. Creepy, organic, but strangely lived in. Also very temperamental.

It only matters if it's to the death.

Try the stories of Harry Harrison.

You're right, I have to correct myself, my steeping time is actually closer to 10 to 12 hours. It was 7pm when I read the post and got inspired to make cold brew again. I expect my first cup tomorrow at 6am!

I just use a French press. My current ratio is 30 grams of coffee grounds to 500ml of water. Mix together, place in the fridge overnight or about 8 hours. Transfer to teapot the following morning so as not to oversteep. Still experimenting though so I'm also curious about other techniques.
