undergrad C/C++ background, PHP is a cakewalk by comparison :-)

ah, understandable. i'm a EE by day and all of the coding i contribute to Mbin is purely for fun with no bearing on real-life, so my github profile is expendable/only for Mbin. ;-)

if you can, please create an issue for this specific problem at https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/issues if one doesn't already exist or thumbs-up/add a comment to an existing one so it gets visibility. broad fediverse compatibility is one of our main project goals, but not all platforms conform to the AP spec (or it's not addressed by the spec) and instead do their own thing, so it sounds like we'll need to work out a common ground.

no, we maintainers (~6 active out of 13 total) have full merge power and admin rights over the repo, all it takes is 1 other maintainer to approve a PR for it to be eligible to get merged into our main branch... C4 ftw https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/blob/main/C4.md.

holy shit, the first one was at Morey's!? TIL growing up I was riding the OG gravitron... nice!

I posted a similar "feeler" thread last year and I'm curious how the more recent/active userbase is feeling about kbin.run. Things you like/dislike/wish I could do better/etc? I welcome healthy criticism, so feel free to let me know your thoughts.

As always, the FAQ page has the latest instance information if anyone is ever curious about the behind the scenes operation.

Hmm, do you have the "Hide NSFW content" setting enabled in your profile (picture attached)? Otherwise NSFW should load just fine. If it's a magazine that hasn't been subscribed to by any other kbin.run user, then it might take a few iterations of federation to take place before any content starts appearing after subscribing. You should see a banner at the top of the magazine warning of lack of subscribers/content if so.

The only NSFW policy I have in place is that NSFW content must be tagged 18+ and comply with all US laws.

TSMC

edit: downvote all you want, the fundamental circuit level design is not in question here... it's how you make the damn thing and TSMC can do it better. intel talks a big game yet continues to fail on delivering any of it. i'll believe half of what they say when i see it... and it helps that good ol' uncle sam is helping them out, they're gonna need it.

Might be a silly question, but can you make sure the kbin.run sidebar on your end is showing subscribed? Even though Mbin shows the total subscriber count, it won't matter unless a local user is subscribed to the magazine in question for federation to take place. Also, if incremental.social is not on the latest main branch of Mbin the DMs won't federate, it'll be officially supported in the next release.

I checked fedia.io and it also is showing the last update about a week ago, leading me to believe it's an issue with incremental.social. I'd recommend using their contact form if you can find it.

Ready for another Mbin feature!? Direct messages (aka DMs) now federate between Mbin instances and to/from Lemmy! Checkout the details at https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/830 and, as always, please report back if you find any issues. The message view has also been revamped, but we're continuing to optimize button positions, text locations, etc... so some of that stuff may still change, just fyi.

@[email protected] is again the dev of honor introducing these long awaited features to make Mbin competitive and play nice with the other platforms in the Fediverse.

kbin.run is testing out the next feature to be added to Mbin -> FEDERATED PINS! Let us know if you find any issues. Also, when a moderator pins/unpins a thread the action will now appear in the instance's modlog, e.g., https://kbin.run/modlog.

Another awesome addition by @[email protected]

we haven't touched that code from /kbin where the only way to request ownership of a magazine is if the original owner has abandoned the platform... honestly, i forget what the "timeout" is but its on the order of weeks/months. you can see the current abandoned magazines at https://kbin.run/magazines/abandoned.

if you send me a DM from your old account with current ownership status, i can manually assign your new account to be the owner of the magazine(s). and if you don't mind (or one of the devs can do) can you submit a feature request at https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/issues/new/choose so a proper implementation can be introduced? thankya!

hard to say for sure, but U109 and U208 could be UART into those Cisco baseband or radio chips. one placement for the 2.4 GHz (G) and 5 GHz (A), respectively. would be interesting to probe around there and see if you get a serial interface to it... obviously for extra credit ;-)

didn't Verizon overbuild most, if not all, of the area with FiOS? not sure how they're getting away with it in the rural regions unless there are still CLECs operating. All this to say... fiber still has the issue of power outages and nonfunctioning customer backup batteries in the ONTs and I vaguely remember some drama over Verizon not offering replacement batteries or providing backups at all.

Test it out and let us know if you find any issues; you add channels the same way as adding any other magazine/community.

How is this possible!? kbin.run is running the PR branch from https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/782

Major props to @[email protected] for adding this long awaited feature to Mbin!

Hi everyone,

kbin.run is approaching its 1 year anniversary (June 11, 2023) and I figured it'd be a good time to provide a quick summary of the infrastructure changes and expenses incurred over the past year.

I've had to migrate servers 3 times to settle on a suitable hardware configuration, datacenter, and price point that works well for running kbin/Mbin. Mbin has made significant performance improvements over /kbin, so the latest server is suitable... for now. Of course, I will upgrade again should it become necessary with additional site traffic, resource utilization, etc.

Total expenses: $612.86 USD Total donations: $111.48 USD Operating deficit: $501.38 USD

Thank you to everyone who has donated to help offset the cost of running the instance, it is much appreciated! If you want to also help me out, please visit the FAQ page for ways how!

Happy cake day to everyone and here's to another great year in the Fediverse and Mbin development!

Hi everyone, I saw a conversation on a certain magazine about the wording of kbin.run's terms of service. I'm not going to reply there because its unproductive and irrelevant to the conversation being discussed. I do; however, encourage everyone to (re)review the privacy policy and terms of service of the instance.

A reminder that this is a US based instance and I will enforce compliance with all established US laws and comply with all law enforcement requests, subpoenas, etc. I am not a lawyer and I'm not going to pay a lawyer to write an all encompassing fediverse friendly TOS, although if that's something people want, please donate to the site so I can afford to hire one. I'd like to think this is one of the most transparency friendly instances out there between all the information I provide in the about, FAQ, privacy policy, terms of service, etc.

With regards to the specific concern about the "third party" wording in Section 11. of the terms of service... outside of the realization that any federated instance subscribed to any user or magazine on this site is by definition a third party... there are also automated measures in place to log and report users that post or share material flagged as child sexual abuse material (CSAM) detected with hashes provided by the NCMEC. This is a ZERO tolerance area and I have already reported several instances that either don't care about this or have no moderation in place to handle it.

Thank you for your understanding and I welcome a healthy discussion if desired; otherwise, please submit a user account delete request and I will remove your account from the site.

I spent a fair amount of time this weekend optimizing the interaction between NGINX, PHP, Symfony framework tuning handles, Postgres and Cloudflare before I give up on this server and move kbin.run to a more powerful machine. The big change that will improve performance: I'm force rewriting the caching headers on images that are being incorrectly served by Mbin (and /kbin) using Cloudflare transforms and caching rules... but the underlying problem is something the Mbin team is aware of and will investigate further.

I hope everyone enjoys the boost in page responsiveness now.

Have a nice week!

At least 1 user needs to be subscribed to a magazine in order for it to receive federated updates, so keep that in mind after searching for a new magazine/community. I get subscribed to everything by default (~~hopefully Mbin will change this behavior in the future~~), so if it's not a magazine I want to see in my feed I will unsubscribe. :-)

EDIT: i've pushed a code change to Mbin so that the admin user is no longer auto-subscribed to new federated magazine searches. https://github.com/MbinOrg/mbin/pull/237

I've offloaded the image processing to a separate process/server and I've been wondering, has anyone noticed any improvement in image loading over the past few days? I don't like overcomplicating the site's configuration, but I was hoping this change boosts the performance at least a little.

Also, for those interested, I've added several donation methods to the site under the FAQ page. 100% of the proceeds are allocated to the operation, maintenance, and expansion of kbin.run. My only goal is to provide you with the best performing kbin/Mbin instance available and I hope my transparency about the site's expenses reflect that.

This paper was written to help people understand current wifi technology, so that YOU can make an educated 'router' upgrade decision -- because there is WAY too much hype out there (especially about wifi speeds) -- and router manufacturers' are directly to blame.

It was brought to my attention that avatar uploads are causing 500 errors and upon further investigation, it appears to be related to a bug in the latest code release. I've created an issue in Codeberg for those interested and will update once the issue has been resolved.

EDIT 2023.08.23: this bug has been fixed with the latest code commit.
