It feels so dirty having to install Zoom or Chrome on my boy.
You pretty much can't go wrong with a Thinkpad, the T series are solid choices and extremely upgradable (T440 and T480 being the most beloved from my perspective).
If you are a vintage dude you may want to take a look at the X series (I've heard good things from the X220).
For a bit more power you may check the X1 Carbon series, these are more modern, but as a consequence they are a bit more enshittified, I really like my X1 carbon gen 7 but man, the usb-c charging port and no ethernet kinda suck.

Oh boy wait until he finds out how many micro adjustments do I do taking the bus.
If you don't install candy crush it will kick you on the balls.
r/androidapps is also still going hard!
I payed Infinity+ just to support this amazing app. I remember Infinity being one of my first true approached to the FOSS community, "It's free, built by pretty much one person, Reddit is a multimillion dollar company, how can this app be better!?.. But pretty much every penny Infinity makes from now on will go to the greedy Reddit admins' hands so I guess this is goodbye.
Such a damn shame.
It may be a little hard to find a FOSS app with a cloud backup, I like to track my progress independently through BookWyrm, you may know it, it would be the federated version of Goodreads.
Librera is the ol' reliable in terms of FOSS document readers, some people may find the UI a little clumsy tho, but it probably is the most feature-rich you will find.
Personally, being a minimalist myself I like the simpler Book Reader. Search, index menu, dark mode and page persistence, it has all I need, nothing more, nothing less :)
