Yeah it's the TLD for Mali. But I imagine Lemmy Devs chose it for Marxism-Leninism. The same way .io is for the British Indian Ocean Territory but is heavily used by tech companies.

Probably, but it's significantly more difficult to set up and maintain, and introduces new problems. I'm sure it'll be considered once they reach the limits of what a single node can handle.

Freenom is the registry, but paid domains are still subject to ICANN rules and freenom can't just seize the domain
