I'm not sure when the spectres stop spawning. If you were spotted by them during the night they likely won't despawn until you leave town and come back. Daggerfall as your hub probably isn't the wisest decision either, because of the spectres. I usually settle down in Wayrest early on.
didn't realize you could punch out magical creatures, LOL.
go to any town, go to any inn (orange on the map) or guild (blue on the map), and talk to people. guilds will allow you to join if you meet their requirements, and there's always a dedicated quest giver inside each guild. random npcs in inns can give you quests as well.
early on you will be approached by a courier with a letter, read the letter and do what the letter says within the time limit it states, otherwise you'll lock yourself out of the main quest.
that is a common first time experience. the imp is a magical creature and can't be damaged by normal weaponry, needs to be ebony/silver/elvan type weapons (same issue with undead monsters); don't be afraid to just run away from stuff early on.
awesome, let us know how it goes! a good race for starting out is High Elf, as they're immune to paralysis which can be a big killer early on. select a major skill as a weapon type of your choice and put STR and END, INT/WIS too if you play to go magic/pyshical.
