The repositories for the big distros are so full that you rarely need to ever install anything that isn't already there for you. I use a crapload of software, and I have literally one thing that I've installed that I downloaded from the internet. All updates are handled by the package manager, so there aren't dozens of services running to check for updates. Installing software on linux was already so much easier, byt Flatpak and SNAP have made it absurdity simple.

On windows, you literally go to some website download an executable, and run it. Every time I need to do it for work, I'm shocked that it's such a messy and insecure setup.

Maybe it's because I'm so accustomed to Excel, but Libreoffice Calc is so painful to use. Not the app that's going to win people over.

A few folks have said something similar but...

Linux is very modular. Distros are mostly unique in the way they combine software that other people wrote, and usually there's just a bit of code or theming that the distro adds. Usually you can take a distro and swap some pieces out for others if you want because it's so modular.

When you ask for something like windows, I assume you're asking for an interface like windows. The interface comes from the Desktop Environment(DE). You probably want either KDE or Cinnamon. I'd pick KDE out of those two, but you should try then each out.

You can put one of these DEs on top of any distro. The bigger distros generally come with a prebuilt version of all of the major DEs, but you can install a different DE even on distros that don't. Personally, I'd always go with a prebuilt one, because switching DEs can get messy for reasons I won't get into.

As far as distros, there aren't really any that are like Windows, because they're all Linux and it's just different. Most distros have reached the 'it just works' point, although you might still hit challenges with wifi or sound or something. Worst case is it takes some googling.

I'd recommend going with something either Fedora or Ubuntu based. I prefer Fedora, but other folks live Ubuntu. Both are great. If you do get drawn in by the Arch side of things, I'd recommend Endeavor OS.

Enjoy

This is a big deal.

The Pop Shell extension includes tiling but not the keyboard shortcuts, gestures, or anything involving workspaces.

Your options to get the full experience would be to manually configure all of those things. It would be far easier to start with Pop_os and add the packages from Kali that you want than to go the other way.

This.

My rice and beans recipe is inspired by my mom's, but updated a bit. It's fast, healthy, and delicious. I add veggies to it, but whatever is around, so it's a great way to use up something at risk of spoiling.

I like a simple design. Lemmy is simple.

I do think there's opportunity to refine the UI. Doing simple but also beautiful and intuitive isn't easy, and Lemmy isn't all the way there yet. I think there could be benefit from a few really good design nerds working on the design.

It's mostly the being rich thing.

It's really sad that something like this gets so much news coverage and international support, while poor people are facing similar fates and we all pretend it's not happening.

I understand the news coverage. These are folks who are relatable to a lot of western audiences. People aspire to their wealth. The international support and rescue efforts though are a little shameful. You don't see this kind of efforts when it's migrants fleeing war and oppression.

I see the attention on the war in Ukraine similarly. What Russia is doing is shameful and I'm glad Ukraine is getting so much help. At the same time Yemen has it much worse. Hardly anyone even knows there is a war happening there, but it's American built bombs that are dropping on neighborhoods. They're not quite white and relatable enough to get us all putting their flag on our Twitter profiles.

Every trip we gotta get: Diapers Organic walnuts Roasted pistachios Beef jerky Mangos

Most of our ingredients for meals are from local sources, so a lot of the time it feels like our Costco trips are just buying $200 worth of snacks. They're good snacks though.

Is your goal to install extensions from the Gnome extensions site?

If so, I remember about a year ago having similar problems. I would up switching to the app "Extension Manager" from flathub and it works really well. I never bothered fixing the browser connector.

I use Windows, Linux and MacOS daily, and want a phone where the connectivity features don't care what platform I'm on. iOS wants you to be on other Apple devices.

Beyond that, Android is more flexible. I don't do much fiddling with my phone's configuration but I like to have the option.

Lastly, I just like the interface better. That's subjective, and no I understand completely why iphone folks prefer that interface, but I like the stock android interface much better.
