I got a Forerunner 265 during Garmin's 100$ off sale. Waiting for my back to recover from getting tweaked to get back out running. Looking forward to all the new run features as well as daily fitness tracking.

Apparently dogs can get norovirus too. He threw up his meals twice. We were both miserable yesterday but so far this morning we both seem to be improving.

Another ls alias I'm a fan of is ls -latr which I alias to lt. It gives you a time sorted directory listing with the most recent next to your cursor (helpful for large directories).

Counterpoint. Maybe it wasn't the folksy music that resulted in her musical maturity and it was her hitting a milestone age. It's a well known fact that artists crossing the 34 year old barrier mature significantly and often hit their artistic stride. You can actually Google "mature rule 34" to see more examples of this!

Dave Ramsey got famous for teaching an educational series and books focused on getting financially illiterate folks out of debt and onto a path of relative financial security using his "baby steps." While not bad advice per se, he's not regarded as an expert if you are already able to self regulate your finances. It gives folks a decent starting point and some reasonable first principles, but he should not be considered to be the gospel of financial advice.

I think the underlying sentiment of the finance gurus in this scenario is not "don't help your family" but rather "you need to put your own oxygen mask on first before attempting to help those around you."

If your financial house isn't in order, helping someone out of their hole first only hurts your cause. (If you only look at finances in isolation and ignore significant relationships...)

1 hour @ 250F on the smoker. Finished at 425 in the oven to crisp up. Gonna toss them in homemade buffalo sauce and serve with curly fries.

I'm gonna be a dad! (self.dadworld)

We're at the hospital now and we can't wait to meet our little one. Mom's doing great after they placed the epidural. Excited to join the Dad crew with you all. :)

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I'm hoping to create a unique and "professional" looking email account like [email protected] or [email protected]. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for [email protected] [email protected] etc.

Consider that I'm starting from scratch (I am). Is there a preferred domain registrar, are GoDaddy or NameCheap good enough? Are there prebuilt services I can just point my domain to or do I need to spin up a VPS and install my own services? Are there concerns tying my accounts to a service that might go under or are some "too big to fail"?

I can expand what hangs off the domain later, but for now I just need a way to make my own email addresses and use them with the relative ease of Gmail or others. Thanks in advance!!

Dry January (self.stopdrinking)

Noticed today in the daily check-in that someone stumbled into the community and committed to not drinking today. Pretty cool!

Are we able to drum something up to encourage a larger participation in a Dry January across the fediverse? I'm not sure how to spread the word, but I've always been a fan of pairing new years resolutions with sober curiosity.

I'd certainly be motivated to actively participate.

I just ate a s'more... (self.casualconversation)

...and it was amazing!! The fact that this delicious treat is reserved for camping trips is a shame. A bit too rich to have more than one, so the bright side is we have extras to do it again!
