I think a lot of people don't know what co-ops are. I have been pretty left leaning my whole life and I only found out co-ops in my late 20s and the majority of people I talked to in real life have no idea what coops are. And from that few that do know, many dont know how big cooperatives can be.

For the uninitiated, I am sharing the [International Cooperative Alliances definition of coops here: https://ica.coop/en/cooperatives/what-is-a-cooperative

and the list of largest coops in 2023 here: https://ica.coop/en/media/library/research-and-reviews-world-cooperative-monitor/world-cooperative-monitor-2023

Screenshot of the top 10 coops based on turnover in USD from the report here:

I wish I could say all of Addis is like this but it's not. The city started doing a lot of construction for better pedestrian and bike lanes earlier this year, which is where these bike lanes were built. The construction is ongoing but it seems like they've abandoned the bike lanes for some reason. The current bike lanes only cover a very limited segment of the city

Non technical person here, I would love to hear more about how decentralized (or not decentralized) the Bluesky protocol is compared to ActivityPub

[–] Twoafros 3 points 2 weeks ago

Do we know if its the same people? I imagine that some people went to Mastodon and some to Bluesky, and very few use both

This seems like a good thing. To repeat what someone on here said, even if its not fully enforceable by the companies, it will be good way for parents to prevent their kids from being hooked on socials at a young age

Greece stopped by 24-hour general strike over cost of living

Summary

A 24-hour general strike in Greece on Wednesday shut down transport, schools, and government offices as workers protested high living costs.

Unions are demanding a 10% pay raise and the return of holiday bonuses cut during Greece’s financial crisis.

They accuse Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of not doing enough to tackle inflation, despite recent minimum wage increases.

Hospitals operated on emergency staff, while protests and marches were planned.

Many say wages have not kept up with the rising costs of energy, food, and rent.

How can reading be no 1 most attractive and comic books are on the unattractive side of the list?

By 2030, Paris will have removed 60,000 parking spaces and replaced them with trees. That’s one of the goals outlined in the French capital’s new 2024-2030 Climate Plan, which was released last week and will soon be voted on by the Council of Paris.

To reach this goal, Paris promises to establish 300 hectares of new green space by 2030, with 10% in place by 2026. Removing parking spaces will be a major component of this. For example, the many curbside spots that flank streets can be replaced with relative ease by lines of trees planted in beds that also aid stormwater absorption. The creation of “oasis squares” in each of Paris’ 20 arrondissements will add other green areas where trees and shade structures such as gazebos offer residents respite from the sun and help lower surrounding air temperatures.

I used to meditate alot and it has helped, using headspace in the beginning but I stopped some years ago. On the bright side I overthink much less than before but meditation couldn't hurt and would probably help

I definitely overthink before sleep, I'm relatively calm in the other places you listed. I never thought about where/when I overthink before, thanks for giving me a new way of framing overthinking, I will try my best not to overthink it

SEATTLE (AP) — Boeing has delivered layoff notices to more than 400 members of its professional aerospace labor union, part of thousands of cuts planned as the company struggles to recover from financial and regulatory trouble as well as an eight-week strike by its machinists’ union.

The pink slips went out last week to members of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace, or SPEEA, The Seattle Times reported. The workers will remain on the payroll through mid-January.

Boeing announced in October that it planned to cut 10% of its workforce, about 17,000 jobs, in the coming months.

This is fantastic!! Thank you so much for writing it and sharing it.

One question, if Ecosia uses Bing + Google, does this mean using Ecosia indirectly generates revenue for Bing and Google?

I just learnt about the search engine Ecosia which claims to use its advertising revenue to plant trees. I was going through their website and they seem legitimate on the surface but I wanted to check if its bs or not before using it.
