There are people who retire on 1/1000th of that. This man made almost a lifetime's worth of money in the same amount of time it takes most people to get a single good night's sleep. Truly unfathomable wealth hoarding behavior

Reflective signs are specifically efficient at reflecting light back at their source and nowhere else (retroreflectivity). Obviously it's not perfect, but the fact that that cone is so narrow is part of why it looks so bright (not dissimilar from the cutoff of the LED lights you are describing). Meaning that light reflected off the roadway before reaching the sign will generally be reflected back at the roadway. With how large some vehicle grills are being built nowadays, it may be possible for a low mounted headlight to be far enough away from the driver that retroreflective signs are no longer as effectively illuminated for the driver. Truckers probably already deal with this, I haven't driven in one, but I suspect road signs are not as well illuminated for the driver as in other vehicles. We don't rely solely on retroreflectivity to make our signs visible, so it's not all or nothing, but it may be worth keeping some nominal illumination (could be like moderate flashlight levels of brightness) at driver level so we can continue to take advantage of retroreflective technology
Accelerationism is ultimately burning the vulnerable at the stake to try and send a smoke signal, so I think it's hard to say that this is a positive development. We can hope that there is a silver lining here where corporate social media self selects itself out of the general populations' lives, but I think we probably have to be realistic about the low probability of success here and the human cost that is incurred in the meantime
I've seen it done. Not for precision, but for rough estimates, I've seen someone toe-heel their way across a job site. Honestly, that and the fact that an inch is usually pretty close to the length of a finger knuckle are really the biggest redeeming qualities of the imperial system in terms of making quick length guesstimates
No, I'm not eating $2000 worth of fast food, I'm investing. People will pay 10x that for recently deceased human organs, and I'm using my money to unlock that earning potential
Wut? The moon definitely does orbit the earth, that's like its defining feature. Am I whooshing?
Pretty sure they said what they want in the second half of the sentence. Slow the product release cycle to match the pace of technological progress. Hard to imagine it happening in a market-driven world, but a slower release cycle would incentivize more affordable, longer supported products without having to change anything about physics
To be fair, the same can be said of the book it is based on
Ah yes, the west. The monolithic political entity that definitely involves nobody who is critical of Donald Trump's ravings. Trump and his sycophants have no place to criticize thanks to his words and actions. Anybody who gets behind his proposed annexations has no place to criticize. But there's a lot of daylight between those groups and the entirety of "the west", both within and without the US. If Brazil or South Africa want to criticize Trump's annexation threats, their involvement in BRICS wouldn't invalidate that criticism so long as they are also willing to criticize the threatening words and actions of Jinping and Putin. The world is not (yet) composed of 1984-esque political monoliths, and there is no need to voluntarily give up that heterogeneity in order to silence criticism of aggressive and threatening geopolitics
A nonrepeating number does not mean that a sequence within that number never happens again, it means that the there is no point in the number where you can predict the numbers to follow by playing back a subset of the numbers before that point on repeat. So for 01 to be the "repeating pattern", the rest of the number at some point would have to be 010101010101010101... You can find the sequence "14" at digits 2 and 3, 104 and 105, 251 and 252, and 296 and 297 (I'm sure more places as well).
Fair, I just think jumping to the conclusion that those folks would have come out to vote for Biden is a stretch when you look at how well his campaign was going. Worth remembering that Harris way outperformed Biden in terms of approval rating, which is a very imperfect metric, but the best one we have for guessing if folks would have come out to vote for Biden but stay home for Harris. In 2020, Biden was a challenger to an incumbent who was botching Covid from both a health and economy perspective. In 2024, he was an incumbent struggling to get out of the shadow of the global post-covid recession and some very unpopular decisions in foreign policy regarding the Middle East. Assuming he would have received 2020 levels of votes is not congruent with those facts
Two different scales at play. The geographic scale clearly changes in the last image, but thankfully the measurement scale (as indicated by the color bar below each picture) stays constant, which would be much more egregious in terms of making the image misleading if it did not.
