And now, Twitter blocks unregistered users, forcing us to sign-up. Wondering that Reddit, Google, and Bing will do the same thing

Lemmy v0.18.0 Release (join-lemmy.org)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/1465740

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Major Changes

HTTP API instead of Websocket

Until now Lemmy-UI used websocket for all API requests. This has many disadvantages, like making the code harder to maintain, and causing live updates to the site which many users dislike. Most importantly, it requires keeping a connection open between server and client at all times, which causes increased load and makes scaling difficult. That's why we decided to rip out websocket entirely, and switch to HTTP instead. This change was made much more urgent by the sudden influx of new users. @CannotSleep420 and @dessalines have been working hard for the past weeks to implement this change in lemmy-ui.

HTTP on its own is already more lightweight than websocket. Additionally it also allows for caching of server responses which can decrease load on the database. Here is an experimental nginx config which enables response caching. Note that Lemmy doesn't send any cache-control headers yet, so there is a chance that private data gets cached and served to other users. Test carefully and use at your own risk.

Two-Factor Authentication

New support for two-factor authentication. Use an app like andOTP or Authenticator Pro to store a secret for your account. This secret needs to be entered every time you login. It ensures that an attacker can't access your account with the password alone.

Custom Emojis

Instance admins can add different images as emojis which can be referenced by users when posting.

Other changes

Progressive Web App

Lemmy's web client can now be installed on browsers that support PWAs, both on desktop and mobile. It will use an instance's icon and name for the app if they are set, making it look like a given instance is an app.

Note for desktop Firefox users: the desktop version of Firefox does not have built in support for PWAs. If you would like to use a Lemmy instance as a PWA, use use this extension.

Error Pages

Lemmy's web client now has error pages that include resources to use if the problem persists. This should be much less jarring for users than displaying a white screen with the text "404 error message here".

Route Changes

Pages that took arguments in the route now take query parameters instead. For example, a link to lemmy.ml's home page with a few options used to look like this:

https://lemmy.ml/home/data_type/Post/listing_type/All/sort/Active/page/1

The new route would look like this:

https://lemmy.ml?listingType=All

Note that you now only have to specify parameters you want instead of all of them.

Searchable select redesign

The searchable selects, such as those used on the search page, have a new look and feel. No more inexplicable green selects when using the lightly themes!

Share button

Posts on the web client now have a share button on supported browsers. This can be used to share posts to other applications quickly and easily.

Lemmy-UI Overall look and feel

lemmy-ui is now upgraded to bootstrap 5, and every component is now much cleaner.

Special thanks to sleepless, alectrocute, jsit, and many others for their great work on improving and re-organizing lemmy-ui.

Database optimizations

Special thanks to johanndt, for suggesting improvements to Lemmy's database queries. Some of these suggestions have already been implemented, and more are on the way.

Query speed is Lemmy's main performance bottleneck, so we really appreciate any help database experts can provide.

Captchas

Captchas are not available in this version, as they need to be reimplemented in a different way. They will be back in 0.18.1, so wait with upgrading if you rely on them.

Upgrade instructions

Follow the upgrade instructions for ansible or docker.

If you need help with the upgrade, you can ask in our support forum or on the Matrix Chat.

Support development

We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for almost three years. This is largely thanks to support from NLnet foundation.

If you like using Lemmy, and want to make sure that we will always be available to work full time building it, consider donating to support its development. No one likes recurring donations, but they've proven to be the only way that open-source software like Lemmy can stay independent and alive.

Is it possible to re-lock the bootloader after I installed MIUI EU ROM on my Redmi Note 11? I've never done relocking bootloader on custom ROMs, and this thought pops on my mind when I realized my banking app don't work with unlocked bootloader.

Thanks.

The Land Bank of the Philippines (LandBank) on Thursday announced that it will cut online transfer fee to other banks through InstaPay effective June 15.

Regardless of the amount, the interbank transfer fee is now at ₱15 from ₱25.

"By lowering fund transfer rate, more customers will benefit from the convenience and efficiency of our products. This is part of our commitment to provide accessible and affordable digital banking solutions, and to help expand financial inclusion," said LandBank President and CEO Lynette Ortiz in a statement.

LandBank said that its mobile banking app and two other platforms, iAccess and weAccess, were able to facilitate ₱265.7 billion in transaction in the first quarter.

The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said in February that it is eyeing to remove fees on small-value fund transfers to promote cashless payments.

BSP Governor Felipe Medalla said the central bank is ready to work with banks and payment system operators to study a “cost-sharing system” that will remove fees on small transactions.

More than 7,000 registered subscriber identification module (SIM) cards were seized from a Taiwanese national and his two Filipino accomplices in a raid in Bulacan province on Wednesday, a month before the already extended deadline for SIM card registration lapses.

In a report of the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) of the Philippine National Police released on Thursday, the three were arrested in their house at Francisco Homes in San Jose Del Monte City around 10:50 p.m.

The identities of the suspects were withheld pending follow-up operations against their other accomplices in the racket.

ACG operatives were armed with a warrant to search, seize and examine computer data issued by Judge Felizardo Montero Jr. of Malolos City Regional Trial Court Branch 11.

The three are believed to have violated Section 14 (presumption and prima facie evidence of intent to defraud) of Republic Act No. 8484, or the Access Devices Regulation Act of 1998, in relation to RA 10175, or the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

The suspects were brought to the ACG headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City, for their documentation and booking for inquest proceedings.

Verified accounts

A total of 7,308 SIM cards from different telecommunication companies were confiscated from the suspects. Some of the registered SIM cards were also found to have verified accounts on different e-wallet platforms, including GCash, Maya, GrabPay, Coins.ph and PayPal, as well as accounts on e-banks SeaBank, Maybank and UnionBank.

According to ACG spokesperson Capt. Michelle Sabino, the suspects have been buying registered SIM cards since last August, “usually from the people in the provinces who need fast cash.”

Each cost P400, provided that they were confirmed to have been registered and verified digital cash wallet accounts.

The SIM cards were then sold to scammers, who could eventually use them for fraudulent transactions and other crimes.

Sold online

In online market places, a registered SIM card may be bought for as low as P350 to as much as P500, which is 10 times the price of an unregistered SIM card that can be bought in legitimate outlets and resellers.

Sabino warned the public against selling their registered SIM cards, which is already prohibited under RA 11934, or the SIM Registration Act.

“The problem here for those who sold their registered SIM cards is that you are technically selling your identities to be used for fraudulent and criminal activities,” she noted.

“Once the cops start doing the money trail for these crimes, it [will] lead to you, you [will] be implicated and we [will] be coming after you,” Sabino explained.

Under RA 11934, the sale or transfer of a registered SIM card without complying with the law carries a penalty of imprisonment ranging from six months to six years, and/or a fine from P100,000 to P300,000.

The Department of Information and Communications (DICT) extended the registration of SIM cards until July 25, another 90 days from the original April 26 deadline.

DICT Secretary Ivan Uy said that as of May 10, around 95 million, or 95 percent to 96 percent, of SIM card owners who are expected to register have already registered, with only 100 million of the 168 million SIM cards remaining active.

Under the law, failure to register will result in the deactivation of SIMs, which will prevent a subscriber from receiving and sending calls and text messages and accessing mobile applications and digital wallets.

Sa mga balak magpalit ng telco o gusto makatipid, pwede kayo magrequest ng USC code galing sa telco niyo. Valid ID at proof of ownership lang kailangan.

Nothing, baka feel at home lang tayo dito sa lemmy.world 🤗

Sana hindi kagaya ng Lionsgate Play na hanggang ngayon wala pa akong na-receive na cancellation notification. Ambulance ride is only exclusive within Metro Manila.
