I think for the purposes of OP's question, we can ignore genetic evolution. That takes place over hundreds, thousands of generations, and history hasn't been around that long.

I think the Fermi paradox would suggest otherwise. If all civilizations succeed in the long term, we would have seen evidence of one by now.

Hi everyone, I'm Out Of Memory. I'm a fan of /r/hpmor, and was disappointed to learn that the rational community did not have a place to call home on Lenny. To wit, I have created this place. Be respectful to each other and we'll get along swimmingly.
