Look up some screenshots of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts or Actraiser. They look almost identical to those games, which were originally accomplished on 16-bit machines. Impressive stuff.

I've got a 32g with Platies, MTS and a couple of assassin snails and a 16g with Endlers and MTS at the minute.
No, the MTS were not deliberate.
If I was getting one myself, I would probably go for the Headrush MX5. There's also the Tone X pedal from IK that allows Rig capture so anyone can capture amps and upload them, then you download them so it's very expandable.
Any idea what kind of style you're interested in? Do you need to budget for any other gear? What kind of guitar were you playing before and how did you find it (what did you like about it, what didn't you, any annoyances or things you wished you could do with it?)
The age old advice of going in person and picking something that feels good to you really is the best thing to do.
