Yeah I think that is totally reasonable. I know plenty of people who ski solo. I figure it's safer to advocate going in a group for newer folk though. Especially since they may be unfamiliar with how decision making changes when traveling solo.
Good suggestion, I added a section on contingencies that covers this and a few other things I thought of. let me know what you think. Perhaps I will pin this one and take continual suggestions for improvement.
Yeah, that is a fair point. I am brand new to this moderating thing at the moment so we will see if I can last. Hopefully I can find some other back country skiers/snowboarders who are interested in helping to run the community.
As @hyperhopper suggests, look into in-person avalanche training before anything. Unfortunately, you probably won't be able to take one until next year if you live in the northern hemisphere. I have several good links in the information bar for this community (see the info button if you are on the app).
The first couple times you go out, you probably want to see if you can rent the gear. You can even do the avalanche course on snow shoes which is quite a bit cheaper than the back country setup. There are also guided trips where you can try it out with a professional before committing to learning everything from scratch.
Yes look into avy courses before anything, back country snow sports are dangerous without the right knowledge. This is in the side bar but I added it to the post as well. Perhaps I will do another post today or tomorrow and post a couple photos of my AIARE 1 course and explain what these courses are like.
This is part of my complaint against Reddit doing this. Google and Microsoft already have the data, they are just ensuring smaller companies and open source LLMs fail. I am also a little annoyed by the app thing, but I think it's important that we don't let tech giants monopolize this new technology.
I deleted my reddit post history, it's not their data to sell.
Thanks, if the images are blurred I am fine with it. I assumed that it just showed stuff if you checked the NSFW box.
Edit: After trying it, yeah it blurs stuff, but I kinda wish there was a more redacted setting as it doesn't blur that much. But I can live with this for now.
I have noticed this for sure, I have not seen any porn or offensive content yet fortunately. But I appreciate the warning, I will be careful using Lemmy in public until this is resolved.
I got started by just ordering the parts and then figuring out how to build the case to make it work later. It's totally fine to start out with the battery connector soldered directly to the nice nano and temporarily attached with tape or something. If you are anything like me, you will rebuild it 5 or 6 times before dealing with the batteries anyway. Just make sure to look up how to safely work with lithium batteries, they can explode if treated wrong.
Edit: I do recommend having a connector of some kind between the battery and the nice nano, it makes working on it a lot easier.
Awesome! I was waiting for a community like this.
Also things are a bit harder if you have a niche hobby. I started a community for back country skiing and I am still hoping that we get more content posters.
Thanks for this explanation, this makes a lot of sense and makes me less concerned about the whole thing.
Serious question though, if a server defederates, do the communities hosted on other servers just become completely un-moderated? This seems like a serious liability for the overall community.
