Ease of use/ ease of access. Any asshole can grab a gun and do something bad with it. It takes a halfway literate asshole to Google someones "cookbook download" and read the pdf. Then take the steps to do anything with it.

Sitting out on my deck listening to the frogs/nature at night. I still hear the bats when they are within 20ft. It isn't loud but you hear them. They are a pleasant addition to the symphony that goes on at night.

You keep varying the situation we are talking about. In the instance of the school. 5 officers with pistols should be able to take a lone, cornered assailant.
Half of the problem with clearing an area/building is not knowing where the enemy is. Knowing where they are allows for tactics, numbers and training to overcome firepower/body armour. Several pistol shots to body armour will incapacitate an untrained/un accustomed person to the pain.

If i was standing next to someone that has an ar15 i would take a pistol or a knife all day. That AR can't do jack if i grab the barrel and point it away from me.
You are talking about a school. Effective range doesn't much matter past 25 meters. They are clearing rooms, not football stadiums.

So I'm not a biologist or any gist that would know something about this. How would the cruise ship have avoided hitting the whale? Do these things just happen and it just sticks more because the whale was endangered?
You also see this sort of thing about cops. I just learned ACAB, all cops are bastards, today. Which I'm getting increasingly tired of. When you try having a discussion with people they are just as stuck in their ways as the right and don't realize it.
Do i think all cops are saints no. But demonizing entire jobs/professions/whatever right wrong or indifferent is the same reason i stopped watching some news. All doom and gloom.
At some point there is a line drawn in the sand that "xyz" means they are no longer in danger of going extinct. It may just be a text book definition but thats what the person is showing you. You can disagree and say "it suggests the opposite" or it doesn't provide proof, but that take can be applied to anything.
We can say humans are going to be going extinct because of the climate crisis. While a valid concern it may not meet the text book definition of going extinct so we are not on the list.
Dis this man they can't be added back later? No of course not. But at this point in time whoever makes up the rules think they meet the criteria for being labeled a recovering population.
