There are foundations of brutality in Mageborn, but they are built in Embers. I can't think of any other series where I've liked the prequel so much more than the source material.
Bud, the foreshadowing isn't exactly subtle in the first book. Mat being garbage is what stops me from enjoying other characters. 5 books with a centerpiece character I can't stand is too many. Everything else about the book isn't bad, if a little derivative. It's just that I can't stand how actively shit Mat is with every decision and having the temerity to bitch about the consequences of his own fucking actions.

Tough to define really. I think it's a combination of tone, setting, and outcome. Not much separates walt disney and the grimm fairytales. My go to dark fantasy is the Embers of Illeniel series, which is a prequel to the Mageborn series. Mageborn is a solid fantasy series with a focus on exploring the magic of the setting. Embers is far more brutal. It still has the magic exploration aspect, but it's dominated by a bleak situation for humanity and explores exceptionally dark ideas in respect to genocide, oppression, sexual assault, and the willingness to use power.
I'm down for the apology. It just lost all impact when OP immediately follows up by blaming ADHD and impulsively. That's exceptionally uncool considering the community that was affected. The sarcasm is also problematic especially considering the level of authority that was abused here. The post couldnt be removed by the exact people who are supposed to be able to remove content when needed. To take the attitude of "big deal, so scary" compounds my suspicion of immaturity and is not encouraging to see in an administrator.
Unfortunately, it doesn't. The fact that Mat becomes the authors favorite or whatever does not help me stomach the walking sack of drippy garbage he is in the first book. The fact that a lot of people say it doesn't really pick up till book 5 or so doesn't help either. I probably wouldn't have been able to stick with stormlight archive if the first 3 books were as punishing to read.
What I'm hearing is "I did a bad thing but I have ADHD and I said sorry so it's a whoopsie that shouldn't affect me" but without a genuine apology. Blaming the namesake of this space and "impulsivity" shows nothing but immaturity imo. We get it. You like money. You don't like being called out. Maybe, don't abuse the rules and you won't get called out?
It's hard finding kid appropriate content anymore, especially with relevance to wider literature influences. If you dont mind movies, have you considered Howard Lovecraft animated series?
Super small suggestion, but check out elantris and warbreaker also by brandy sandy before you drip into stormlight archive or secret history. They're not required by any means to enjoy any of the stories here, but they definitely clue you in to a few more Easter eggs than you'd notice otherwise. Iirc, both of those books are available through his website or by emailing his team at no charge. Could be old info but both the books are entirely worth their price anyways imo
