It used to be that a disappointing performance by the men could be ameliorated by a good one from the women. The performance was actually quite good, the result again no good.

11:30pm kickoff for me. Decided not to stay up late which was a wise decision. Although, I probably would have snoozed off well before the end of the match.

My aspiration that we would hang in there at least until the next international break doesn’t look good but we can still have a turnaround before Christmas and thereafter, especially getting Ødegaard back soon. 🤞

I’m trying to exist inside a healthy space between these two Alexander Pope quotations:

Hope springs eternal in the human breast/the hearts of Arsenal supporters

Blessed is the man/Arsenal supporter who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed

He’s not the Messiah, (but) he’s a very talented boy.

This is the original version of the song covered by The Breeders on Last Splash, a few years later. Carrie from Ed's later toured with The Breeders for some time.

This short-lived Flying Nun Records band was led by "the punk rock self-belief" of Shayne Carter, who went on to play and release music as part of Doublehappys, Straitjacket Fits, Dimmer, The Adults (a Kiwi supergroup), with NZ post-punk luminary, Peter Jefferies and solo as Shayne P. Carter.

I like the youthful energy of the song, even though it sounds like it was recorded in a burlap sack!

This is the full run down about the EP that this track is from. It was re-issued for Record Store Day, a few years ago.

A breezy slice of indie rock/pop from Singapore's Sobs. I don't know much more about them, but note that they also got over to Seattle, last year, to do this session.

This is one of my favourite songs, yet I don't own any of their music, apart from the 7" single of Obscurity Knocks. I have def listened to the rest of the album Cake that this song is from and their other releases, via streaming, since then. The funnest fact I know about them is that The Trash Can Sinatras' Frank Reader, is the brother of Eddi Reader from Fairground Attraction. She married one of her brother's bandmates n 2013.

I had completely forgotten about the No Alternative compilation, until I listened to a podcast about it the other day. I remember playing the CD a fair bit, but I don't seem to have it now. I might have borrowed it from someone and given it back.

Posting this track because I was (and still am) a big fan of Kiwi bands of the era, and I was pretty stoked that The Verlaines and Straitjacket Fits, two of my favourites, were included. As far as I know, Heavy 33 didn't get a release anywhere else and only popped up later on their "Greatest" compliation.
