I have a few questions, please comment if you match all of most of these:

  • Do you use an RX 6000 series GPU?

  • Do you experience random freezes when playing games?

  • Are those freezes a "page fault"? (Use journalctl to check)

  • Do these issues occur in OpenGL games?

  • Are the page faults a GCVM_PROTECTION_FAULT?

  • What mesa version do you use?

  • What Linux distro do you use?

I've been having frequent freezes and it renders my operating system nearly unusable. I have to restart my computer to recover, and I lose all of my unsaved work.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? Do you use an RX 6000 card on Linux but have not had this issue?

6900XT on Ubuntu 22.04 with 0 issues. Maybe it's an issue with recent mesa updates or your hardware

What mesa version are you using?

6800xt user here Been dealing with it since like july-august , most commonly happens in OW2 and Starfield, not using opengl for those of course

Minecraft is the only opengl game I play, it has had a couple mystery crashes here and there but none were pagefaults

I've been running mesa-git updated almost every night running Arch with KDE.

It's been annoying, I can't find a consistent way to trigger it sometimes going days without happening.

Linux 6.7rc kernels and recent mesa commits have helped but it still happens about once every 2-3 days

What desktop environment are you using?

RX6600 on arch. It was kinda a nightmare a few weeks ago ngl. The whole screen freeze, lost the video signal then gives false hopes by returning the signal to the screen but still freezed requiring a hard reset.

  • I crashed in the middle of a game.
  • I crashed on the desktop when i just started the session.
  • I crashed every time i tried to open blender 4.0 because i enabled the HIP option, some rocm or mesa had dependencies issues or something, i ended up installing the flakpak.
  • I was blown away when i discovered that launching LibreOffice made me crash, ended up using the flatpak too.

I made a new fresh install of arch on a different drive and did some quick tests, the issue was still here.

I'm not having those frequent freezes anymore so there's that. Don't know what's so special about these cards but holy moly that's my first time having so many issues with a graphics card.

I run an RX6600 and haven’t had any freezing issues. Which version of Mesa and which games? If it’s all OpenGL games that would be rather strange.

Mesa 23.2+

Games as simple as Minecraft eventually crash my PC.

What distro?

KDE Neon using X11 with latest stable kernel+Mesa.

Not sure if this will fix your problem but try Wayland and see if you have the issue. I don't know why a lot of my problems with games were fixed and it might help you.

I already use wayland. X11 is miserable for me

Are they using vulkan natively (not dxvk through wine)? I posted about this when running the experimental vulkan support on BeamNG.drive https://www.beamng.com/threads/vulkan-api-%E2%80%93-feedback-known-issues-and-faq.79967/page-12#post-1617244. Looks to be very similar maybe?

My OS details are in that post but also here:

OS: Arch Linux x86_64
Kernel: 6.1.39-1-lts
Resolution: 3840x1600
WM: sway
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X (32) @ 3.400GHz
GPU: AMD ATI Radeon PRO W6800
Memory: 64209MiB

All other games, even ones that use vulkan, work fine for me, it's just BeamNG.drive

EDIT: well, I'm not on 6.1.39 anymore... I have obviously updated since that post, but the rest is the same...
