Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently highlighted the critical need for ministries, government departments and the public to unite in reducing sugar intake, extending responsibility beyond the Health Ministry.

This call comes in light of Malaysia's staggering RM9.65 billion expenditure on treating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in 2017, with diabetes alone accounting for RM4.38 billion.

It's not sugar.

It's high glycemic-index foods...simple carbs are the worst (sugars, breads, pasta, beer, alcohol).

Better are complex carbs, those with a lot of fiber for example (things like oatmeal).

The best things are fats and protein. Your body needs the essential amino acids they provide, and they have a low glycemic response.

Unfortunately, we also have a high consumption of processed simple carbs like white rice and bread here in Malaysia other than sugary drinks. I've been told eateries are cutting down on sugar on drinks though

white rice and bread are both complex carbs tho.

That has been debunked long ago. Presence of protein and fat will lower Glycemic Index.
