MODERATORS

Currently, the Arch Linux Forums uses FluxBB which, while it does work, is rather dated, and could use a fresh coat of paint. The hot forum software of the day seems to be Discourse. Does Arch Linux have any interest in switching to that?

Discourse is a pain for sysadmins. I hope they wouldn't.

Less control, total change in moderation abilities, bowing to the whims of discourse changes, and lots more.

As a sysadmin, if it works and is secure….

Yep, no reason to change at all :).

What advantage does Discourse have over FluxBB?

[–] svenstaro 4 points 1 year ago

We are wanting to change. See the public discussion at our GitLab. FluxBB is an unmaintained dead-end and it's just a question of time when it breaks. The migration path has to be well-developed before we do it though.

In that issue, you can we did an evaluation of all obvious alternatives and it really comes down to Discourse. It really doesn't seem to have any modern, maintained alternatives.

So yes, it will happen. Question is when.

As Mike Love would say, "don't fuck with the formula."

IMHO the forum looks just good. Simple yet functional design. No need to fix something not broken

Some people always want to use the latest even if it brings less advantages or functions worse just because they like the look of it

I kind off like the first one more, reminds me of days when forums were relevant. I never really liked the Discourse look.

Why not move to some Lemmy instance. Make its own community?

Every serious discussion that I've heard between staff about this idea has been basically met with "eww, fuck no"

Apparently it's a giant PITA to host/admin, and nobody wants to take on the increased workload to switch away from what's already working just fine.

I can't stand the "It's dated; replace it!" mindset. Why would you spend time (or expect others to spend their time!) fixing something that isn't broken?

My knee jerk reaction read that as "Discord", and was about to say how much I hope the fuck not.

I hope not. I am not the biggest fan of Discourse. As long as the forum is usable on mobile, I am fine with the traditional forum look.
