... wait am I the only one who conscientiously not want to upvote my own posts because of that?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 year ago (1 children)

it not being there by default does make you feel a little hesitant and facebook-grandma-like when you do, but i stopped caring lol

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I’m just honest with myself. I like what I post, so I like my post!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

it's the most self assuring mindset for sure 😁

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Hmmm so that's why I downvote myself...honesty

I grew up browsing the Facepunch forums, where self-rating posts was also possible and public at least at one point in time.

To be blunt, it kinda just made everyone who did it look like a tool and they got hella made fun of. So no, you're not the only one, I avoid upvoting my own stuff like the plague.

good thing people here arent that rude and judgemental (as far as ive seen)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Pop your head in over at m/politics. Rude and judgemental as far as the eye can see...

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 year ago

Me when I do that on every platform and have always done it.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly you should either not be able to upvote or boost; or it should just be done automatically. I never think to do stuff like that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

maybe, in any case its not such a big deal for now. ernest and his team are very busy with more serious matters, so im sure they will sort that later if need be. auto boosting wouldnt make much sense tho, since its like a retweet. i know we do it now for reputation, but when the reputation is fixed it wont need to be used for that

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It's the default on reddit because you should like your own content in almost all cases.

I do it too, though I'll then change it to a downvote if I say something which is later demonstrated to be wrong.

10A, we meet again. yes, i do it cause im use to seeing +1 upvote on reddit, and posts look sad and lonely starting off with 0 and 0 lol. cant say i ever downvoted my own post or comment tho, usually ill edit it and correct myself in that case, and not upvote it. everyone has their own way of going about it (ㅅ´ ˘ `)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Last time this happened I edited to add something like "Edit: This is a bad response. See below." and then downvoted it. If you edit too much, the rest of the conversation won't make sense anymore.

But agreed, posts with no upvotes look so sad and unloved!

Upvotes don't affect reputation (yet) so I feel there is no foul in self-upvoting. It just slightly improves visibility of the content in the 'hot' section when freshly posted.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

i dont think there is a foul even if it did, did self upvoting on reddit even affect karma anyway? it's just a fun little personal thing for me lol harmless

For me it's more like: me upvoting my old comment because I forgot I wrote it because I think "Hey, this guy's being reasonable and not yelling at people and stated both positives and negatives about a subject while trying to present a balanced view."

Then a few seconds later, looking at the username and realizing, "Oh hey... that was me."

Alternatively: "This was useful advice and solved my hardware problem, upvote" and then realizing it was also me, but I'd forgotten that I once knew the solution to that hardware (or software) problem.

Edit: although to be fair, in both of these circumstances (particularly the second) I'm talking about the entire internet in general rather than kbin / lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Just makes me think of giving myself a high five. But I still do it :D

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@minnieo I think the real question is how many people actually check who upvoted what?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

thats part of why i stopped caring, no one really looks haha

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I've yet to see you upvote your comments... I expect you'll pump those numbers up!!!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I upvote my own stuff because on reddit something having 0 upvotes means someone downvoted it, so i associate having 0 points as "bad" even though that doesn't make sense here because downvotes are shown separately :D force of habit

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

i actually love that downvotes are shown separately and i hope that never changes. on reddit, i grew accustomed to glancing at the rating and allowing it to determine my opinion of the comment, whether subconsciously or not, which is wrong and usually unfair due to mass downvoting (1 downvote brings an onslaught of downvotes). on kbin though, the fact that they are separated changes how i perceive comments a lot, i view them way more neutrally and hardly pay attention to the score. nice change of pace

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Reddit allowed you to see the exact number of upvotes and downvotes until 2014, and it had a similar effect to how it is over here. It feels great to have them back!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

I'm in this picture too

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Go ahead and give yourself a little boost too! You deserve it! (☞゚ヮ゚)☞

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Lmaooo so truee xD

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Am I missing something? Using Jerboa I am unable to find any feature letting me see who upvoted a post or comment.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

its a kbin thing i think
