I still have the purple game boy colour. Lost all the games but a nice keepsake.

original GBA was perfect for me. ergonomic design. bigger buttons than a JoyCon, all it needed was the backlight from SP
Mt favorite is my red SP. I put so many hours into that thing playing Fire Red and Zelda. My first gameboy was a green GBC, but I tried to βmodβ it with a rechargeable battery in highschool, and ended up frying it :(
I still have my red SP, but I canβt play it because the screen is atrocious. I find it hard to believe that I was ever able to play on that thing! I also donβt want to risk modding it (even though Iβm much better at that stuff than I was in HS lol)
My SP is unmodded as well. I found it very friendly in the eyes to play in the 7.30AM bus with the darkness.
Try to get yourself an used GBA (or GBC if you want some sort of closure) and mod it, even if more expensive now, should be doable
It might be sacreligous to say but my favorite actual Gameboy to play on these days is the GBA Player GameCube attachment. I've found myself preferring playing these game on a couch with a comfortable controller for longer periods.
Handheld I currently prefer bringing my hacked 3ds out and about, but the further that slides into retro the more afraid I'll be of bringing it out of the house like my actual Gameboys
Never owned a gamecube to try this, but sounds fair π Like in the Switch playing in docked mode in the TV.
I also have a hacked 3DS to play when travelling further, I like to think these consoles are for playing, never gonna be retro enough to leave them at home
For me it's the Game Boy Pocket and GBA SP. I loved the smaller size and larger screen of the Pocket compared to the original DMG, and I just generally like the clean lines of the design. I intend to do one of those Game Boy Pocket Color mods when I get some free time, a colour screen Pocket looks great.
The GBA SP has another pleasing design, and the the folding screen makes it so compact. Plus there are lots of fun limited edition shells to collect or choose from.
The Game Boy Micro is also nicely designed, it feels very solid in the hands. But it's almost too small, and it only plays GBA games. Screen is very vivid though.
Nintendo DS Lime color. Or it would be if L/R buttons didn't suck.
The original Game Boy, unmodded. π€ More recently I got a Game Boy Pocket, which I always dreamed of owning. It's nice, I appreciate the really large screen (even bigger than the Game Boy Color screen!). But the size and screen and nostalgia of the DMG will always be my favorite.
