Okay, this will certainly fuel all the speculations on the uncertainty of his seat...

Markoโ€™s Revenge.

This is the only way I can see Ricciardo realistically getting another shot at Red Bull. If Perez can't race this weekend and Ricciardo does well, he might be back in it.

As far as Iโ€™m aware Danny is not the Red Bull reserve driver. Lawson is and would be the person to take over the seat if Perez is out.

Danny is their 3rd in line driver.

Edit - Or maybe Yuki in Red Bull and Lawson in AT

Also, I believe part of the reason Danny isn't racing this year is his contact with McLaren, he would lose out on millions of dollars if he raced this year. The specifics aren't known, but supposedly even racing as a reserve driver will cost him.

[โ€“] Fingerthief 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I canโ€™t say Iโ€™ve seen that mentioned anywhere? He had options with teams and turned them down or wanted too much money.

Based on what weโ€™ve heard from Red Bull heโ€™s off the pace in the sim as well. I think itโ€™s just the fact Red Bull arenโ€™t confident in his ability yet.

Doesnโ€™t make a lot of sense to throw him in the car with no practice in a real car for quite awhile compared to Yuki and Lawson as well.

[โ€“] rumckle 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I don't think it was confirmed, and it was a while ago I saw it. But (alledgedly) the reason he turned down the options with too little pay, is that they had to beat the amount that McLaren was paying him not to race.

Agree, he wouldn't be the first choice regardless

To clarify, this kind of depends on the race. Daniel is a reserve driver for Red Bull (also Alpha Tauri), primarily at the races heโ€™s attending (of which there are eight, I believe). Lawson is presumably the default at the other races, but if Ricciardo is available they could well choose him instead.

But yeah, as Lawson and Ricciardo are shared with Alpha Tauri, they could also, for example, ask Yuki to drive the Red Bull and put, say, Lawson in the AT.

I wonder if the reserve drivers have stipulations in their contracts that they have to be used if one of the primary drivers is unable. Or is Red Bull able to choose whoever they want.

[โ€“] Fingerthief 1 points 2 years ago

Thatโ€™s a good question, I imagine they could make an exception if they really needed to.

I canโ€™t remember a time a listed reserve driver didnโ€™t follow through with actually driving the car though. I also have a terrible memory so I could be wrong haha!

Checo would push the limits of what's humanly possible to stay in the car to rule this out, even if, as mentioned below, DR is not the first choice replacement.

[โ€“] TSMKFail 2 points 2 years ago (2 children)

They have more options than just Danny Ric though. Jake Dennis has tested for RBR before and is in good form atm, leading the FE championship. Cassidy is currently part of Red Bull and his current form is insane. They also have Lawson as a test driver. Yeah Danny makes the most sense, but if you give a new driver a chance, you can see how well they fair and can have them replace De Vries if they do well.

[โ€“] Know_not_Scotty_does 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I like Danny Ric and all but does he really make the most sense here? Yeah, he's on staff and has had some sim time but he isn't current on the grid like some of the other options. Based on loads of rumors over the last year I would guess Yuki would be a more likely choice to get him in as a skill test before putting DR back in the car. Just a guess though.

Wouldnโ€™t they put a driver from FE through the AlphaTauri first? Itโ€™s a jump from FE to top team F1.

FE cars were hitting 170mph in Portland last weekend. Heโ€™ll be fine. :-)

Uff, that's not what he needed
