My mom told me if I want to find good internet culture (that I think died), I need to go on Instagram.

I'm pretty happy that my housemates, family members, and friends are cool with Signal. It's still centralized, but at least it's โ end-to-end encrypted, and โก run by a nonprofit that is managed by cool people like Meredith Whittaker and Moxie Marlinspike and seems to have its head on straight.
(It does help that those among our friends who are drug dealers or sex workers were already using Signal. That gave it some credibility when I proposed it as the group chat for my house rather than SMS/MMS, or (ugh!) Facebook Messenger.)
Fire and brimstone street corner preaching will get you further than you think. People comply just to shut you up. It's how I got my family on Signal, Bitwarden, Firefox, and DDG. They are all happier for it and have started a little bit of prosthelytizing themselves. You just have to be willing to stomach straining your relationships in the short-term lol
