Gun is a Blaser R8 in a GRS Bifrost Stock, Atzl Trigger, .308win semi-weight (for range only), with a Leupold VX6 3-18x50. Remington Factory ammo.

I knew I can shoot, but had never been on a range >100m before (pretty damn hard to find here...). Very happy with results.

That’s great. Did you know the bullet’s speed and calculate the drop and get 10p from the first shot or did you shoot first and compensate for drop based on the impact?

Speed according to package was rather accurate, it turned out. Didn't know in advance

Oh, and I needed a few shots to get it to zero at 300m, but not that many

Which Remington factory ammo?

May I ask where the 300 m range is?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unken, Austria. Excellent range

Thanks for the info! A bit far away for casual shooting but maybe on a free weekend. :)

300m with an 18x? That's damned good. I have an 18" barrel .308 with the Leupold VX-5HD 15x and I can't even see my shots land at 200 yards. I'm hitting within about 4.5" at 200 yards, which is pretty poor considering I can hit sub 1" groups at 100 yards. You're a damned good marksman!

Do you time your shots in-between your heartbeats? I've noticed that if I don't take every shot on the same beat of my heart (either contraction or expansion) then my shots from expansion beats will be an inch higher and to the right. It's pretty neat how in-tune with your body you need to be to shoot at these distances.

Hmm, i certainly couldnt see the shots as well, thats what the electronic display is for ;) had to restrain myself not to look at it after every shot.

No, i dont time anything. I never had anyone teach me how to shoot, got my hunting license here 2 years ago, got that gun and been doing a few hundred rounds since then. Used to shoot air gun as a kid, though. I simply put the gun on the sand bag, try to get it on target as much as possible, so I dont have to shuffle around with the rear bag ( i prefer to steady with my hand anyway) too much, then I pull the trigger - actually I do it quite fast, if I stay on target for more than lets say 30sec or so, I start losing focus and I better abort or Ill shoot a few centimeter off. That group is 2 mags, 2x4 rounds that fit in the rifle.

Honestly, most of it I think is because that rifle really really suits me well. It just feels natural. Oh, and it is pretty scary accurate itself, probably a LOT more than I am. No idea what would be possible if you steady it on a platform.

Yeah I just shoot off a front bag as well, which is how my heartbeat interferes with my shot, because I'm bracing against my shoulder. I'm shooting a Remington 700 tactical, not because I wanted a tactical, but because it was the only 700 I could find.

That screen is really cool. I wish we had those at our range. We just have spotter scopes set up that aren't really powerful enough at 300 yards.

Do you have the CDL (custom dial system) on your scope? Mine has one, but I haven't had it custom made for my area and ammo yet. It's still pretty great at adjusting elevation.

No, I have a regular 1/8moa wheel, which is why I just recently got a new scope with mrad ballistic turrets. Haven't had time to try, though. And the 300m range means >2h one way drive anyway :-(

For hunting, I use the same gun just with a .270win barrel and a different scope, that one is zeroed at 150m, that way I can shoot pretty much anywhere between 0 and 220 metres, further out I wouldn't do anyway on a live target. But the shot still needs to hit a palm sized area for me to be satisfied, that's why I need to train.

Ah that's super cool that you can swap barrels and change the caliber.

I'm very fortunate to have a 300 yard range about 15 minutes from me. I'm even more fortunate that it's a club. $280 per year and I can shoot for free all year, get discounts on ammo, and have a gate key and can shoot even when they're closed. They also have a trap range, 3 archery ranges, and a pistol range. It's probably the coolest club I've ever been a part of.

Oh wow that sounds awesome. I HAVE a 300m range, only 10min from where I live. However it is only open to the - I don't know, maybe 3 or 4? - people who train on a national level and no one else gets to shoot at that awesome range they purpose built for the Olympic games some decades ago. So 364 days a year it's empty. Fuck me, gun laws in Germany are awful. Used to be so much easier back in Switzerland, or even at home in Austria :(

Here I am shooting at paper targets and metal plates in 2023 while y’all are in 3023 with electronic targets! I wish there was a range like this near me!
