The drivers rarely get the trophies, getting a smaller reconstruction if anything. I think this is why they now get the medals - they are theirs to keep.

I don't think this is right. McLaren are well known for keeping all the trophy's, but they do give the drivers replicas. When Hamilton signed for mercedes, he said part of his contract was that he got to keep all his trophy's. Schumacher also has a large personal collection, now housed in the Schumacher museum, which implies Ferrari don't have a policy of keeping them.

Hamilton keeps almost all his trophy's in storage. Apparently his dad has a few on display, but he doesn't. He's quoted as saying the only thing in his house F1 related is a portrait of Senna.
