Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

It's really pretty simple. We have made it socially acceptable to do nothing and awkward to talk about it. Deniers need to be given the same response as someone making a racist comment or joke: "Not cool! The effects IPCC predicted as worst case, years ago, is happening! This almost getting to the point of flat earth!"

The most proactive action I've seen is people glueing themselves to roads. Didn't I hear in the old days they'd blow up oil pipelines, or was that just in the movies?

Maybe we should all just start riding bikes and wearing MAGA shirts and other GOP dog whistles to dissuade coal rollers and such? Eventually the MAGA crowd will see their own riding bikes and think it was their idea. Cities will then be forced to build bike infrastructure.

there was a movie called "how to blow up a pipeline" in which the protagonists did exactly that, and groups like the ELF existed. I agree that these weird get yourself arrested plans are dumb

Real reason: Our country is owned by big business and they don't want to make uncomfortable changes.

That's easy to answer. It is because American politicians work of their lobbyists, not their constituents.

Some certainly do...but not all, and you can overcome the lobbyist-favoring bias if something gets clear press coverage. It's a big deal that the press very rarely explains that the bulk of the problem is due to fossil fuel burning.

The same people that own the lobbyist also own mainstream media soooo ...

It's just the expected behavior of capitalism.

Most media serves lobbyists coz advertising money and business relationships. They anyway wouldn't want to do explainers coz that wouldn't get views

Corporations have completely bought out the government. QED. They think they can surf the decline while the rest of us die.
