I’m curious as to you guys opinions. It could be Mastodon itself or a Mastodon client. What features would you like to see that are not currently available?

100% better migration options. I want to take my posts with me, I want people going to my old profile to redirect to my new profile. I feel like I've been stuck on my Mastodon instance, which is very small and is not tended to by the admins a lot, because of the lacking migration functionality.

Mastodon already has that. You can export and import ~~posts~~^[@[email protected] clarified below that you can only import lists, bookmarks, blocks, and mutes. Not posts.] in the settings, and under Account Settings, you can move to a different account so people are redirected to your new profile.

My screenshot doesn't show import as an option because I migrated away from this Mastodon account to Firefish.

Sadly, while you can export everything, you can't import posts in Mastodon without having direct access to the database and poking about.

You can import following lists, bookmarks, blocks and mutes, though.

Ah is that so? My mistake then.

It's stupid that it's not there, though, and I suspect it will get fixed at some point. Basically, some concerns were raised about people using it to doctor timelines (but they can already do that by setting up a single-person instance and messing with the database), and the new instance can validate the signatures of the posts anyway, so they're no less secure than posts from other accounts received via federation. If anyone is really concerned they could slap an "imported from ..." banner on old/migrated posts so people are aware they were not originally posted there.

Um omg this is amazing news haha! I should have followed the mastodon updates more closely it seems, I had no idea we could do this now. Thanks so much for bringing that to my attention 😀

Optional and customisable algorithm, and quote posts.

Those two things would make Mastodon a lot more popular and better.

full text search is available as of the last update. accounts have to opt-in for their posts to be searchable.

Better than the full-text search that was included in the most recent update ?

  • Proper federation of favorites and boosts. You can't see favorites from people outside of your instance for some reason, and boosts are sorta federated from people outside of your instance, but still not fully. Lemmy manages to federate upvotes fine, so it seems like it'd be possible.

The app I use (Moshidon) loads the actual favorite count when you open the favorites list, but it's annoying I have to go through that step.

  • Quoting Posts

  • Higher poll option count. 4 is not enough. I'd say it should be at least 6, preferably something like 15 or 25.

  • Higher character count per post. No reason for it to be capped at 500. I'd say the default should be 1500.

Also I think it's hard for admins to change the default character count, so that should be made easier.

  • I'd really like an algorithm (optional, of course). Getting content you want to see is really difficult. It's hard to find people to follow, and when you do you get all of their posts in your feed, not just the ones you want to see.

Make sure you are following hashtags if you aren't. Follow people to get everything they post. Follow hashtags and you'll just get interest based posts (since pretty much everyone hashtags the shit out of their posts for visibility).

Hashtags dump a bunch of stuff into my feed that I just don't care about. I just want a good way to sort search results by something other than chronological order so it's easier to find people to follow, a chronological timeline is fine as long as I can choose what shows up there

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which app do you primarily use?

[–] MysticKetchup 1 points 1 year ago

Megalodon, though I do like Tusky as well

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Following hashtags seems to give me all the content I want, more than from what people I follow post. Maybe experiment with different variations of hashtags.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Nah, doesn't really work for me. Most topics I want to follow, hashtags are either not used, or used too broadly so I'm not really interested in what I get, or used too often so my feed gets filled with posts and I can't see the people I'm following.

What I do is if I want to see somebody's posts but I don't want to see all of their posts, I put them into a list. Then if they boost a post I like, I check out the person's account and either add them or don't add them to the list. Doesn't work too well, but it's not awful either.

And then I also have 1 hashtag pinned (Moshidon feature), so that I can see the posts on it without getting them in my home feed.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Complete separation of text from hashtags, so that hashtags are not counted in the word limit. Allow posts with longer word limit with an automatic "read more" tag or automatic splitting of longer text into a thread. Also quote posts.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

The most important thing is a separate icon for sending personal messages (using the drop-down menu to select “Only for those mentioned” is not convenient and you can simply forget to do this).

I would like a more user friendly design. For example, most applications for Lemmy have a very user-friendly design.

And probably the most anticipated thing by users is the introduction of e2ee. I have read many requests from users on this topic.

Some kind of federation for hashtag follows is what I'd like to see the most. Currently I am using a larger instance mainly to get a good chunk of the traffic for the hashtags that I am interested in. The ability to filter content for user follows would help in this area too. I want to be able to follow a user but only see their posts with specific hashtags.

Oh, and markdown support! Really miss having a proper way to do lists, literals and code blocks.

markdown support

If you are on (or migrate to) a server using the Glitch-Social fork of Mastodon, you'll get markdown support. It's a game-changer, in my opinion. (glitch-soc has lots of other nice features too, btw).
