I know hosting servers isn't cheap, it would be wonderful if there was a way users could contribute to the running costs in some way (e.g. buymeacoffee or Patreon). I certainly would like to :)

Thanks for the thought. For now I'm happy to pay the cost out of pocket, to see how things go and what the actual costs will be.

If it turns out that the upcoming flood of reddit refugees mean it isn't feasible and I need to shut it all down, I'd rather not have taken anyone's money.

I think we'd rather not see this shut down though if we're seeing this as an actual alternative.

At this stage, it looks like we'll be around for a while :)

Good to know. Best thing about this Fediverse thing is we can browse the rest of it too. Not sure how that impacts posts from here though.

Yeah fair enough. It's going to be interesting to see what the next few days and weeks bring 🫠

FYI the server is currently running on OVH in Sydney, on this spec:

Seperately to that, the images are now stored in an object store bucket on Wasabi, also in Sydney. Its free for the first month, with $6 minimum while under 1TB.

Assuming this place doesn't implode in the next month or so, I'll figure out some way for people to chip in. Though to be clear, this is not a priority, its ~$30AUD per month with the current setup.

Oh cool, thanks for sharing mate. I hadn't heard of Wasabi before, might investigate using it for one of my personal projects
