I remember seeing this at a theater screening of Oscar nominated animated shorts. I'd done no research and wasn't expecting a Don Hertzfeldt entry. I loved it and it's since become one of my favorite modern sci fi movies. An older woman in the lobby was complaining about it afterwards and I still think it's funny how different pieces can speak to people in such wildly different ways.

The image and title make it seem like it’s just sci fi. It’s a weird short with other universe / sci-fi themes. It’s funny and surprising and I immediately watched it again after seeing it the first time. Best short this guy has done imo.

The girl's voice lines were recorded in a play session with his 4yo niece and much of the story was constructed around them.

If you like this, I definitely encourage you to check out the trilogy “It’s such a beautiful day” he did. It is one of my personal favorite bits of animation ever made.
