I'm planning on upgrading lemmy to v0.18.0 tonight, probably around 9pm CDT. So there will be a bit of downtime, but I don't think it should take too long.

Release Announcement: https://lemmy.ca/post/862306

edit: kids baseball game went long, should start around 10pm CDT.

edit2: going to start in about 5 minutes. 9:55pm CDT.

edit3: looks like we're updated. let me know if you notice any issues!

Thanks @[email protected] for everything you do.

I know no one likes to talk about it because they think it looks cheap or desperate but I'll say it anyway.

SUPPORT YOUR LEMMY INSTANCE

I believe and it's my opinion that we should all normalize paying just a little bit to our instance operators to keep their service running. They have to pay costs for maintaining services and running hardware, the costs aren't much for a small instance but the costs grow as the system becomes popular with more users and more active users.

The more we normalize giving just a bit to our instance, the better protected they will become from burning out administrators, managers and owners who pay for the things that keep this engine running.

It's great to see all the changes they're making and that the devs are listening to community feedback. Looks like the community is also helping out a lot with all the shoutouts in that post!

HTTP API instead of Websocket

Super excited about this one. The live updates in the comments is kind of neat, but it makes trying to browse the All tab basically impossible.

I didn't see it mentioned - have they fixed the weird Hot/Active bug in this release?

Thanks @smorks for keeping this place running!

From what I've been able to see using lemmy.ml (they are on 0.18 already), the sorting seems to be fixed, hot/active works as expected, and there are other sorting options available, too.

I'm really looking forward to 0.18 on lemmy.ca!

I was wondering about this too when reading the changelog. I didn't see any references to it.

Came here to check when this instance was updating, thanks for running it!

Have you considered installing the extension mentioned in this post to help examine the bottleneck issues?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

I was reading about that last night. would like to give it a shot.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

That's a beefy release. I'm excited to see it. Good luck with the update and thanks for putting in the work.

Captchas are not available in this version, as they need to be reimplemented in a different way. They will be back in 0.18.1, so wait with upgrading if you rely on them.

Is there any concern about losing captchas? Seems like the bot situation is still rampant at this point. (Shouldn't be long though for it to get added again https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/pull/3289)

lemmy.ca has closed registration and you need to write an application, so i dont think this affects us as much as a bigger / open instance

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

yep, exactly that.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

sorry everyone, kids baseball game went long. will hopefully start the upgrade around 10 CDT.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I was wondering when you were gonna tackle this. I hope it goes well!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Thanks for the work and hosting the instance!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks! Maybe point https://status.lemmy.ca/ at somewhere you can let us know how it's going?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Is it just me or is there some websocket that's causing the page to jump to the top every 3 seconds?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yes that's happening. Apparently that's going to be fixed with the latest version if I'm not mistakened.

It seems to be ok now... I turned off my VPN, not sure if that had something to do with it or not.
