The US, Britain and the EU have pledged €60 billion to help Ukraine rebuild. But Germany's development minister says it's "obvious" that Moscow should ultimately foot the bill for the destruction caused by the war.

Russia still hasn't acknowledged any of their WW2 atrocities so yeah lol - good luck with claiming that.

That being said, the point of this message is not to collect the claims but to shame Russia so people would wake up and I think it's a good thing.

1919 Treaty of Versailles intensifies

There is absolutely no way Russia is willing to pay reparations unless Moscow is occupied, and we have bigger problems if NATO is so bold as to escalate the situation that far.

All this does is give Russia State media more ammunition to form their narrative that the west is trying to destroy Russia, and escalating it into an existential conflict for the Russians. It's incredibly irresponsible for them to be saying stuff like this in my opinion.

yeah, absolutely. We're on a Path to a new WW2 if this continues like this.

Seems like there would be a better name for a "New WW2"... Maybe "WW2 Version B". Or possibly "Subsequent WW2".... Oh well, I guess there's no perfect way to name the next WW2.

WWW2 maybe?

[–] YellowtoOrange 16 points 2 years ago

Damn right. Start by releasing russia's funds held by other countries to Ukraine.

[–] Elden_Potato 13 points 2 years ago

Shit, they won’t pay to rebuild Russia.

[–] Mulkor 12 points 2 years ago (2 children)

And who is going to force them to?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

Thats the trick, it will be nuclear war before any conditions of surender can be pinned on russia.

No one will force them to do so just like no one will force Germany to pay the reparations to Poland. These demands although rightful are used mostly as a political tool. While for Ukraine such stance is beneficial because it could lead to changes in laws in various countries and seizing russian assets around the civilized parts of the world that would actually at least partially pay for the destruction, then for Poland it's a tool to gain leverage over Germany and become even more relevant in Europe. Recently I stumbled upon pretty nice read about the latter.

tl;dr:

Russia must pay to rebuild Ukraine, says Germany - DW - 06/23/2023 Skip to content Skip to main menu Skip to more DW sites. The US, Britain and the EU have pledged €60 billion to help Ukraine rebuild. German Development Minister Svenja Schulze has told DW that Russia should one day be made to pay for the reconstruction of war-ravaged Ukraine. Schulze was attending the Ukraine Recovery Conference in London, an international gathering of delegates from more than 60 countries aimed at funding rebuilding efforts in Ukraine. Germany is scheduled to host the next Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2024.
