WASHINGTON - America's honeybee hives just staggered through the second highest death rate on record, with beekeepers losing nearly half of their managed colonies, an annual bee survey found. Beekeepers told the surveying scientists that 21% loss over the winter is acceptable and more than three-fifths of beekeepers surveyed said their losses were higher than that. The overall bee colony population is relatively steady because commercial beekeepers split and restock their hives, finding or buying new queens, or even starter packs for colonies, said University of Maryland bee researcher Nathalie Steinhauer, the survey's lead author. Some commercial beekeepers who have succeeded in the past lost as much as 80% of their colonies this past year, while other beekeepers did well, it varied so much, Evans said. The demand for pollination from commercial bee colonies is growing even as the beekeepers have to work harder to make up for losses, Steinhauer said.

The United Wa State Army announced on June 21 that it will not accept the Thai authorities' request to withdraw five military bases on the Myanmar-Thailand border. The announcement was made on the Wa Channel, the news agency of the UWSA. The UWSA said in a statement that it will not accept Thailand's request to withdraw its military bases on the Myanmar-Thailand border. On June 19, the statement came out after Thai authorities requested the Myanmar officials to remove the five bases of the UWSA on the Thai-Myanmar border at the 97th meeting of the Thai-Myanmar Township Border Committee held at the 1G1 Hotel in Tachilek, Eastern Shan State. The UWSA's statement stated that these military bases are not located on the Thai side, but within Myanmar's borders, protecting their area. Wa Channel news agency reported that UWSA's Southern Liaison Officer said that there is no need to pressure Thailand to withdraw those military bases.

Two Canadian agencies announced plans on Saturday to look into the circumstances surrounding the deadly implosion of a submersible near the wreckage of the Titanic, with the Transportation Safety Board already moving ahead with a full investigation. Cliff Harvey, the TSB's director of marine investigations, said his agency would conduct a comprehensive review of what happened. The RCMP announced Saturday that they would be launching a preliminary probe of their own to determine if a criminal investigation is necessary. The overall investigation could eventually involve several countries. Titan owner OceanGate Expeditions is based in the United States, the submersible was registered in the Bahamas and those killed in the possible implosion hailed from England, Pakistan, France and the U.S. Stockton Rush, the company's CEO, was piloting the submersible, which carried British billionaire Hamish Harding, French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henry Nargeolet and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his 19-year-old son, Suleman as passengers.

ISW will cover subsequent reports in the June 25 Russian Offensive Campaign Assessment. Russian sources widely voiced concerns that the rebellion could disrupt Russian forces' ability to defend against Ukrainian counteroffensives, but many milbloggers asserted that Russian forces are continuing to repel Ukrainian attacks. Prigozhin attempted to justify his armed rebellion by accusing the Russian MoD - namely Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chief of the Russian General Staff Army General Valery Gerasimov - of causing irreversible Russian losses on the battlefield and for striking a Wagner base, but notably did not criticize Putin. Russian milbloggers claimed that intensified Ukrainian assaults and decreased Russian artillery fire contributed to Ukrainian advances south of Orikhiv during the night of June 23 and on June 24. Russian forces continued ground attacks near Kreminna amid Russian claims of continued Ukrainian assaults in the area on June 24.

'Today the world saw that the masters of Russia do not control anything. Chaos in Russia works to Kyiv's advantage, Ukraine officials said on Saturday, June 24, but it remains to be seen whether President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and his army can capitalize on the disorder caused this weekend as mercenaries marched towards Moscow. The Prigozhin unrest, the biggest internal challenge to President Vladimir Putin as Russia's paramount leader for 23 years, has spurred global security concerns and a frenzy of calls between Washington and its allies to coordinate actions. Ukraine's military reported on Saturday an offensive near villages ringing Bakhmut, which was taken by Wagner forces in May after months of fighting. Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council, said on Saturday there was no immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from the frontline to Moscow.

Japan's Self-Defense Forces have been testing Starlink since March with the system deployed in about 10 locations and in training, Yomiuri newspaper reports. TOKYO, Japan - Japan's military is testing Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet service with an eye to adopting the technology next fiscal year, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, June 25, citing unnamed government sources. The Ministry of Defense already has access to communication satellites in geostationary orbit, but use of Starlink technology, operated by Musk's SpaceX, would add a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, the Yomiuri said. Japan's Self-Defense Forces have been testing Starlink since March with the system deployed in about 10 locations and in training, the newspaper said. Musk said in October SpaceX could not afford to indefinitely fund Starlink's use in Ukraine.

US and European officials were reportedly caught off guard by the attempted coup in Russia. Pentagon and White House officials gathered for emergency discussions on Friday night when details of the chaos emerged, CNN reported. Despite the growing tensions between Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Russian military hierarchy, few had predicted how far Prigozhin would go. US secretary of state Antony Blinken was making phone calls to allied capitals. You think about the instability for Russia that would inevitably come from that, even if this whole supposed coup fails.

Dr. Schweitzer said that he was now going through the eight papers on which he collaborated with Dr. Gino for indications of fraud, and that many other scholars were doing so as well. According to her résumé, Dr. Gino has a Ph.D. in economics and management from an Italian university. Questions about her work surfaced in an article on June 16 in The Chronicle of Higher Education about a 2012 paper written by Dr. Gino and four colleagues. One of Dr. Gino's co-authors - Max H. Bazerman, also of Harvard Business School - told The Chronicle that the university had informed him that a study overseen by Dr. Gino for the paper appeared to include fabricated results. The paper has been cited hundreds of times by other scholars, but more recent work had cast serious doubt on its findings.

A submersible expert and friend of Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, said he tried to warn him that the Titan sub was flawed years ago. Stanley said Rush told him to be prepared for the cracking sounds he heard on the Titan's first dive, which Rush said the vessel's carbon-fiber material produced. The next day, he emailed Rush about possible defects. Stanley asked Rush if he was considering taking passengers on it to see the Titanic before he knew what was causing the sounds, CNN reported, but that he didn't get a response. David Lochridge, the former director of marine operations, said that Rush asked him to carry out a quality inspection of the sub, and found there was a lack of testing carried out on the hull.

The intelligence report says it's not so certain. The report does confirm that the Wuhan lab did not always adhere to safety protocols in studying coronaviruses. The report says the Wuhan institute is known to have collaborated with the Chinese Army, but only on defensive projects related to improving China's biosecurity and early disease warning capabilities. The report also confirms the disagreement among U.S. agencies, with the National Intelligence Council and other intelligence agencies favoring the natural origin theory, while the FBI and Energy Department favor the lab leak hypothesis. Republicans in Congress have increasingly pushed the lab leak theory, and accused the Biden administration of trying to cover it up because the U.S. funded research at the Wuhan lab.
