A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted, clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts: 1

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
    • If you feel strongly that you want politics back, please volunteer as a mod.
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report the message goes away and you never worry about it.

There are some limited uses where I really wish this was the case.

I work in 911 dispatch, it happens way too often that someone calls for an officer to come out, then when they get out there the officers can't find them- no answer at the door, they're not waiting near where they said they would be, etc. and there's no obvious signs of an emergency So they have us call them back, we get no answer, and the officers have to leave.

Then a little while later they call back irate because "the cops never came"

We pull the incident up, tell them that yes they did come out, they couldn't find you, and you didn't answer your phone, so they had to leave.

And then they'll be like "well my phone was on silent, so I didn't hear it" or say they didn't answer because it was an unknown number.

We could probably avoid some of these if we could turn their ringer on from our end and set the ringtone to a message saying something like "you are receiving a call from 911, please answer your phone"

I also wouldn't mind being able to remotely turn on speakerphone, because some people like to put their phone down and walk away from us even though we're still trying to ask them questions or give them instructions. At least it might let us hear what's going on better even if they're refusing to talk/listen to us. And occasionally people can't figure out how to turn on speakerphone when we need them to when we're trying to do something like CPR where they need to able to listen to us and have both hands free.

Might also be nice for pocket dials, we get way more of those than you'd think.

I never thought of a use like that. Sounds like a frustrating and rewarding job, thank you for doing it.

NGL, this should be a thing you can enable for your contacts. Anyone not in your contacts defaults to something you set. I think it would be funny as hell

Can you imagine though, you're sitting in a meeting and that one friend calls and Wet Ass Pussy starts blasting on your phone?

[–] ilickfrogs 7 points 2 years ago

hahahah you see, that's why I would only enable it for select contacts. I can't trust everyone with that kind of power

This would literally only exist to embarrass people.

You son-of-a-bitch, I’m in

This is one of my /r/showerthoughts posts that were deleted by the subreddit mod/automod. Here, my shower thoughts are accepted lol.

It'd add a whole new weapon in the arsenal of spam callers. Imagine if their ringtone was just a monotone "This is an official invoice from the US Government. Ignoring this call is a violation of the law." Someone out there would buy that, as silly as it sounds.

Or just the trolls who would pick something obnoxious like sex noises or a siren to play to prank unsuspecting callers. God what a nightmare that would be lmao

This used to be a thing a decade ago, although not exactly the same. You could set your own ‘call tune’, and anybody who called you heard that before you answered instead of the usual ringing sound.
