From what I’ve seen ing bg3 a nat 1 or 20 dont make a difference for conversation checks, it’s all just pass/fail

afaik RAW there are no crits in skill checks. Only do and do not. Not too familiar with 5th Ed. though.

You are correct about RAW. A lot of DMs will still do something special with them but it's a table by table thing.

Yea that might just be a DM specific thing at my table, stuff like a nat 1 causing you to puke on the king instead of kiss the ring is fun sometimes

If you get nat1 in BG3 then no bonuses count. So let's say you have +3 bonus from Charisma and need to hit 4. If you throw 1 it's just fail because the +3 bonus won't count.

Nat20 is automatic success regardless of bonuses (even negative ones if you have disadvantage like - 1 from low intelligence).

I feel like the game should just remove the dice altogether and just initiate combat every time I talk to someone.
