I am just wondering... is it me- or is there a LOT of just general negativity here.

Every other post I see is...

  1. America is bad.
  2. Capitalism is bad. Socialism/Communism is good.
  3. If you don't like communism, you are a fascist nazi.

Honestly, it's kind of killing my mood with Lemmy. There are a few decent communities/subs here, but, the quality of content appears to be falling.

I mean, FFS. It can't just be me that is noticing this. It honestly feels like I am supporting a communist platform here.

I am on social media to post and read about things related to technology, automation, race cars, etc.

Every other technology post, is somebody bashing on Elon Musk (actually- that is deserved), or talking about Reddit (Let it go. Seriously. We are here, it is there).

On my hobby of liking racecars, I guess, half of the people on lemmy feel it is OK to vandalize a car for being too big.... and car hate culture is pretty big.

All of this is really turning off my mood regarding lemmy.

Every point of your post is ironically you complaining about prevailing sentiment or opinion all the while stating your opinions as objective truths, have some self awareness ffs.

"I went to an open source, federated system and didn't like the politics." Lol, k.

I bet you think yourself smart and clever.

Did you really think Lemmy was some kind of utopia?

Also, FUCK CARS

It's funny, because every time I've joined a new platform like this (hacker news, reddit, etc) there was always a ton of posts about "wow the conversation is so much more respectful and the content quality is way better" and all that. This is the first time I've seen that where it doesn't actually seem to be true and seems more like a circle jerk. Some discussions are worse then what I experienced on Reddit, some are better, but overall when I browse Lemmy I don't feel like I'm learning nearly as much as I used to on Reddit. But on the other hand, Reddit quality went way down, so there's also not much to go back to. Sad times on the Internet, I can only hope Lemmy grows and gets more valuable content and discussions

And- up until a few weeks ago- I also felt the same way you did.

Everyone was grouped around the common cause of getting away from reddit, and everyone seemed to bond together with that common goal.

But, I guess, since we are all here now... the conversations are turning to DEFEDERATE xxx instance. Lets ban xxx community. (xxx not literally being xxx, but, just referring to whatever community is in the crosshairs for the day).

That, and, it just really irks me when everyone does an incorrect comparison, or incorrectly references data.

For the example of the post which set me off for today- 90% of Americans have air conditioning, compared to 20% of Europeans.

While, many people realize the geographical reasons to this- Many DON'T. And, they don't want to hear about it either.

(rant incoming).

Nope, it can't just be due to the fact europe has a milder climate, it has got to be due to houses in America built from sticks, without any insulation. (There are people who actually said this, and agree with it.. without realizing the southern US, gets HOT.)

but, enough fussing. I need to find a solution to this problem. I'm thinking of just building a negative sentiment bot that auto-bans people with negative sentiment in the majority of their comments.

I mean, politics fuck up casual conversation as well as topical discussions. That's the way it is in real life too. You get a big enough group together, and there's always that one person that has to wedge politics into the conversation, no matter how far away from politics it starts.

But, being real, lemmy has always had a strong political base because that's part of why it was started.

It's easy enough to avoid the political C/s and instances. And it's trivial to block people that shoehorn politics into other things. So it is only a problem when starting a new account.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Lemmy has literally everything. There's very little moderation on some instances and things can get wild one way or the other, but you can block the communities (and if you use the connect app entire instances) and users posting it. Using the block button has massively improved my experience.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The problem I am facing- it's not just a few instances or communities exhibiting this behaviour. It's literally everywhere.

I support the right for everyone to have their own beliefs, so, I don't care if somebody is liberal, conservative, communism, socialist, etc...

But, the heavy socialism influence is literally EVERYWHERE.

It's not just isolated to hexbear, lemmygrad, etc... It's literally everywhere.

Any mention of capitalism, or being a conservative, is immediately called out as being facist and nazi.

Myself, I stick more on the libertarian side of things, but, damn. I am subscribed to communities all over lemmy, on many instances across the world, and the hatred feels like it's everywhere.

Its literally making me question my decision to host this instance, just so I can pay to store a bunch of socialism good, capitalism bad memes on pictrs.

[–] Shikadi 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Huh, that's not really my experience. Maybe because libertarians are so intensely pro capitalism/free enterprise/de-regulation that it just seems like everything is anti capitalism to you? Jeff Bezos being a piece of shit and the desire to tax billionaires isn't anti capitalism. I think one other thing to keep in mind is the US is politically on the right in a global context, and Lemmy seems to have more of a global presence than Reddit did. The US and the UK are pretty alone in their overall political beliefs when you add in the rest of the world to the conversation

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I don't stick to true libertarianism. It's not the way.

But, i'd rather be associated with them, over being either liberal/democrat or conservative/republican. None of the parties are perfect, and only idiots will blindly believe and follow any individual party. But- that's a different story, for another time.

I am just sitting back, observing the interesting voting behaviour occurring on this post.

[–] Shikadi 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm a leftist, it works. I don't align with the democratic party, but they align with me a whole lot more than Republicans. And I am extremely against deregulation. Are there stupid regulations that benefit rich people? Yes. Does that mean we shouldn't have regulations? F no. There's a third option, it's not rocket science, fix the broken regulations. Corporations will never regulate themselves, history (both past and present) has shown that. Wait why am I ranting about this again?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I’m a leftist, it works. I don’t align with the democratic party

Hey, that typically means you have the capability of thinking for yourself.

I'd honestly agree with basically every point you just made.

One thing I learned a long time back- I have an uncle who is quite liberal. Myself, I usually stick more on the conservative side. The funny thing is- if we actually talk about a current hot topic... we actually find we usually end up agreeing on things, after you remove the political element of it.

Universal healthcare? Yea. we need this. It needs to happen. But, the method of how, is the tricky part. I personally, have zero faith in our government to manage something, without royally fucking it up, and hemorrhaging money and resources. I mean.... let's be honest, they can't even fix a damn pothole.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

This hasn’t been my experience, honestly. But I don’t look at political communities.

As a consolation, I’ve granted you 10 minutes of good vibes to browse to! Use them wisely and be well ~

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Looks like there's a few users on this instance that you should ban (top comments on this thread). They are clearly the type of people that you are talking about in this post are too stupid to realize it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I prob should. And even considered it.

But, I typically save the ban option as a last-resort.

Also, have not seen you around in a minute.

I pop by every few days and see what’s new. Not much activity that piques my interest in any of the Lemmy sites. Seeing a lot of what you mention in your post too. Turns me off. I don’t have the energy or fucks left to give to invest in this tech.

Edit: peaks -> piques

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Not much activity that peaks my interest in any of the Lemmy sites.

I'm feeling this too. Have not seen too much good content which interests me lately. Lots of bot posts. and lots of reposted memes.

/shrugs. Guess only time shall tell.

If it wasn't nearly free for me to host this server, i'd have already shut it down. But, the resources are sitting here idle, and the domain is paid for the year... so, might as well keep it going.

[–] zeppo 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Which of those posts in the screen shot are “America bad!!” or “you are required to like communism”?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I mean, I just randomly visited a post on lemmy world about people in europe not having A/C units... and every other post says something along the lines of America is bad.

Its in [email protected]

Guess, people can't imagine other parts of the world have a different climate. Nope. Just America bad.

[–] zeppo 0 points 1 year ago

I feel like “america bad” is likely an incomplete summary of what those posts said.

[–] zeppo 0 points 1 year ago

?? Okay, I read the comments about AC and didn’t see anyone criticizing the United States at all. People were discussing Europe, the UK, climate and air conditioning.

[–] SaakoPaahtaa -4 points 1 year ago

Yeah lemmy is very pro-commie and thus pro-authoritarian. But its fun, its like going to the zoo to look at retards.
