I have my AP's setup and all I need now is sine sort of firewall appliance. I am hopping to make it run openwrt as that's what I'm used to using. I'm looking at a nanopi but they seem expensive and overpowered to me. Is there a cheap alternative?

I love my Pfsense Netgate appliance. May be overkill for your use case, but I split up my home vlans across different networks. You can then use on-device dns blocking for ads (like a piHole).

That's way overkill and out of my price range

The NanoPi R2S costs 25$ and does what you need. If you require more power maybe a Banana Pi R2 or Banana Pi R3 Mini?
